Oregon Bee Project launches second strategic plan (OPB News)

Initiated in 2017, the Oregon Bee Project rallies around a science-based strategy to protect bees and educate Oregonians about them. The organization recently launched its second strategic plan. Andony Melathopoulos is an associate professor in the Department of Horticulture at Oregon State University.

OSU researches ways to modernize hydroelectric power and energy storage (KEZI)

More and more, how we get our electricity is critically important. And there are a lot of reasons for that, from increasing needs to climate change. As a result, researchers at Oregon State University are looking at how to make systems more efficient and flexible — and they've got a federal grant to do it. (see also KGW)

Programs help Oregon homeowners facing high wildfire risk create defensible space (KATU)

One of those programs directed the Oregon Department of Forestry to work with Oregon State University in creating a statewide interactive wildfire risk map. The tool went live last week and allows homeowners to check the wildfire risk level of their property.

College Board no longer disclosing AP results by ethnicity, state (Higher Ed Dive)

The College Board used to annually publish granular breakdowns of how students scored on its Advanced Placement, or AP exams. And Jon Boeckenstedt, vice provost for enrollment management at Oregon State University, would painstakingly download each data set to translate into a more digestible format on his admissions blog. The testing provider’s reports represented an in-depth dive into the assessments, which can earn K-12 students college credit if they receive a high enough score. (see also Inside Higher Ed)

OSU researcher named one of world's most highly cited scientists (LIFE@OSU)

Perfume for ice cream, please explain yourself (Bon Appetit)

Brands don’t actually expect you to adopt novelty products like these into your regular culinary arsenal, says Sarah Masoni, an award-winning dairy judge and ice cream innovator who works with food companies to develop new products at Oregon State University’s College of Agricultural Sciences. Wacky ice cream flavors are usually produced in a limited run and intended to get hyped-up customers in the door, she says, “because at the same time, they’re going to buy their favorite” scoops. In America, that’s good ol’ chocolate, cookies n’ cream, and vanilla.

Lawsuit aims to protect threatened species, but fire scientist says management delays could be worse (Jefferson Public Radio)

But Regional Fire Specialist Chris Adlam with Oregon State University says the BLM plan is a good approach and that the plan will help reintroduce beneficial fire. “We wanna avoid these large areas of high-severity fire that tend to burn again and again at high severity, and prevent the forest from regenerating,” Adlam says.

Debate rages after woman asks if she can wear sandals to interview (Newsweek)

In 2000, a study by researchers at Oregon State University explored the importance of first impressions in job interviews. The study focused on 59 employment interviews with two trained interviewers taped during twenty-minute interviews. They then filled out a post-interview questionnaire evaluating the candidates on their interview performance, behavior, rapport and professional skills.

Climate action should be linked with primate protection (Earth)

A new study led by Oregon State University (OSU) has argued that efforts to conserve the carbon stored in tropical forests would benefit by linking them to policies designed to protect the endangered primate populations that live there. Since climate change and the biodiversity crisis are two of the major problems our planet is currently facing, integrating climate mitigation and biodiversity protection has a greater potential to attract support among both policy makers and the larger public than trying to tackle climate change in isolation.

Why does an AI faculty shortage exist? It's complicated (Inside Higher Ed)

Others point to the historic interplay between higher education and the tech industry. Consider, for example, the field of computer graphics, suggested Cherri Pancake, an Oregon State University computer science professor and former Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) president.

The well's run dry (Bend Source Weekly)

The region has experienced some level of drought conditions for the last 20 years, and although precipitation levels have been high compared to previous years, that's barely making a dent. According to Chrissy Lucas, a groundwater protection specialist at Oregon State University, "You can't make up for all of that drought and the lack of rain in one or two years."

Deep roots and tight bonds nourish rural parishes (Catholic Sentinel)

All three parishes are surrounded by farmland, but agriculture is becoming a declining part of the rural economy. “Farmers are a really small share of rural populations,” says Bruce Weber, emeritus professor and director of the Rural Studies Program at Oregon State University. “Nationally, about five percent of the rural population is farm related. And only about two percent or of the population physically lives on a farm. Rural is mostly in the service industry or manufacturing… pretty much what urban people do,” says Weber, a member of St. Mary's Parish in Corvallis.

Octopus in crab pot is no surprise (Newport News-Times)

Dr. Tim Miller-Morgan, an aquatic veterinarian at Oregon State University’s Hatfield Marine Science Center in Newport, said it’s not surprising or unusual that the crabber snagged a giant cephalopod in his crab pot.

Today's photos

Wild horses: Dudley Chelton, university distinguished professor emeritus, says, “All three are photos of wild horses and were taken in mid-May 2022 in eastern Oregon. May is the best time of year to see wild horses. Foaling season is in April and the newborn foals have matured enough to be very energetic and active by mid-May. Meanwhile, May is mating season, and there is a lot of fighting for dominance, not just between stallions but also between mares.” We are accepting photo submissions at [email protected].
