When Oregon State University ecologist Tyson Wepprich was choosing his post-graduate projects in 2017, using Ohio data to measure long-term changes in butterfly numbers “didn’t seem like exciting science,” he said. With many vulnerable patients developing UTIs post-discharge, a new study suggests that better monitoring is needed after leaving the hospital. Researchers at Oregon State University explored more than 3,000 at-risk patients. The study revealed that the risk of infection tripled once patients went home.
Kathy Gunter, associate professor with the Oregon State University Extension Service, stepped in to create a classroom-based physical activity program called, "Be Physically Active 2DAY!" or BEPA. BEPA aligns with Oregon health and physical education standards.

In this study, toxicologist researcher Kim Anderson of Oregon State University in Corvallis, Oregon, and colleagues looked at 78 house cats that were age 7 and older. Half of the cats had hyperthyroidism and half did not. The cats were fitted with silicone pet tags that can pick up volatile and semi-volatile organic compounds.

At a location in Klickitat County, researchers placed 20 traps in three different ponds. Bergh and two volunteer interns from Oregon State University checked each trap during the morning session.

“Cross-sectional studies have yielded contradictory results regarding the effects of combat exposure on depressive and anxiety symptoms, with some studies finding that veterans with combat exposure such as witnessing severe injury or death reported higher levels of depressive and anxiety symptoms, but other studies reporting nonsignificant associations,” Carolyn M. Aldwin, Ph.D., Jo Anne Leonard Endowed Director of the Center for Healthy Aging Research at Oregon State University, and colleagues wrote.
“The structure of the bloom clearly shows the influence of ocean circulation on the distribution and concentration of phytoplankton,” said Michael Behrenfeld, a phytoplankton ecologist at Oregon State University.

Great Move-Out Results: Campus Recycling received donations of 22,533 pounds of items in the 2019 Great Move-Out Donation Drive. While organizers did not meet their goal, they are proud of the amount that was donated this year. Organizers want to thank those who donated, as well as the volunteers and staff who made it happen. The donations help local nonprofits and those in the community who are in need, and benefit the environment by promoting the reuse of materials.

Grads Give Back Update: Grads Give Back is a program seeking to reduce barriers that under-resourced students might experience at graduation and reuse what are traditionally single-use garments. We are still accepting gowns in good condition (no damp/damaged gowns and no caps, cords, etc.) at the MU Info Desk, Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Arnold Way closure: Workers will be excavating the existing waterline in Arnold Way on Tuesday, July 16, beginning at 7 a.m. The work is being done so city water crews can install new service taps and lines. The northbound lane will be closed and there will be flags around the zone. The work will not impact the signal at Harrison Boulevard.
Parking lot closure: The parking lot between Weniger Hall and Gilbert Hall will be closed July 1-19. Work on the parking lot includes removal and repaving of the asphalt in the parking lot and sidewalk repairs.
