A unique computer model to measure the snowpacks' water content has been created which will offer an essential tool for scientists, landslide analysis, as well as resource managers. Researchers at Oregon State University developed this new computer model, and they published their findings in The Cryosphere. (see also KTVZ)
“Historically, these regions of the Pacific were thought to be barren, but it turns out, they’re actually quite dynamic,” says Ricardo Letelier, a microbial ecologist at Oregon State University who, in collaboration with David Karl at the University of Hawai‘i, led the new study, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America.
″(Oregon) is one of the hot spots for bee biodiversity,” said Andony Melathopoulos, a bee expert with the Oregon State University Extension Service in Corvallis. The state has more species of bees than all the states east of the Mississippi River combined, he said. The long list of bees in Oregon includes metallic sweat bees, alkali bees and black-tailed bumblebees.
The Oregon Department of Forestry and Oregon State University are establishing monitoring sites to identify potential causes, which may include drought.
And by pulling carbon dioxide out of the water during photosynthesis, eelgrass also acts as a buffer against ocean acidification, says Magel, who is quantifying some of these benefits as part of her doctoral research at Oregon State University.

Mehlenbacher and his team at Oregon State University oversee 50 acres of land dedicated to hazelnut breeding. He creates new hazelnut types resistant to disease that threatens the future of one of the state’s most important crops. The new hazelnuts could be crucial to Oregon’s plan to supply a growing domestic market.

When Oregon State University cut the budget for the Sheep Center in 2012, many in the industry thought it would cease to exist. Schmitt, an OSU chemistry professor, was one of the 150 principal investigators who examined the 60 pounds of moon rocks brought back by the Apollo 11 astronauts. Elle, a member of the Class of 1939, worked with Kodak on the camera that was used to photograph the lunar soil.
