A unique computer model to measure the snowpacks' water content has been created which will offer an essential tool for scientists, landslide analysis, as well as resource managers. Researchers at Oregon State University developed this new computer model, and they published their findings in The Cryosphere.  (see also KTVZ)

“Historically, these regions of the Pacific were thought to be barren, but it turns out, they’re actually quite dynamic,” says Ricardo Letelier, a microbial ecologist at Oregon State University who, in collaboration with David Karl at the University of Hawai‘i, led the new study, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America.

NIH $2.3M grant to help develop nanoparticle therapy for muscle- and weight-wasting disorder (Cystic Fibrosis News Today)

Oleh Taratula, Ph.D., a researcher at Oregon State University‘s College of Pharmacy, has been awarded a $2.3 million, five-year grant to support a research project into a muscle-wasting disorder called cachexia that can affect people with chronic diseases that range from cancer to cystic fibrosis, multiple sclerosis, Crohn’s, and rheumatoid arthritis. Pesticides may kill bees, but not all bee deaths are caused by pesticides. That is the conclusion of a new study published July 10 by researchers at Oregon State University investigating bumblebee mortality beneath flowering linden trees.
 

OSU scientists played a role in Apollo 11 (Gazette-Times)

NASA’s Apollo program was a mammoth undertaking, with scientists, contractors, universities and others all pitching in on various pieces of the project. Two of those scientists had Oregon State University ties, Roman A. Schmitt and Bruce Elle. Schmitt, an OSU chemistry professor, was one of the 150 principal investigators who examined the 60 pounds of moon rocks brought back by the Apollo 11 astronauts. Elle, a member of the Class of 1939, worked with Kodak on the camera that was used to photograph the lunar soil.

NEW! Romeo and Juliet: OSU Theatre will present “Romeo and Juliet” for the popular Bard in the Quad summer productions in August. It will be performed at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 1-4 and Aug. 8-11 in the Memorial Union Quad. Attendees are encouraged to bring low lawn chairs and/or blankets, warm clothing and food if desired. Hot cocoa and cookies will be available for purchase during intermission. Seating begins at 6:30 p.m. and no one will be seated prior to that time. The production includes the use of prerecorded amplified gunshot sound effects as well as prop firearms that are clearly marked. The sound effects may also be heard during rehearsals July 27-31. Tickets are $17 for general admission, $12 for students and seniors, and $5 for OSU students. Payment of relocation allowance: A new process for Payment of Relocation Allowance has been implemented to improve operational efficiency and consistency related to processing relocation allowances. As a result of these process changes, some minor revisions have also been made to fiscal policy 03-120-404 Relocation Allowance.
