Alexandra McInturf at Oregon State University and her colleagues tagged a 7-metre female basking shark (Cetorhinus maximus) off the coast of Ireland on 24 April with a device that records movement in three axes, depth, position and video. (see also ScienceCNNUSA Today)
 

Recent research details potential solutions to Ross Island Lagoon's cyanobacteria blooms (Think Out Loud)

Since 2017, Oregon State University and the Willamette River group the Human Access Project have been working on reducing these lagoon blooms. There is work being done by different groups to address the cyanobacterial blooms in the Ross Island Lagoon. Desirée Tullos, professor of water resources engineering at Oregon State University, joins us to share more.
 

Oregon's underwater forests are vanishing. Can they be saved? (Oregonian)

Calvanese, who manages Oregon State University’s field station at Port Orford, also began fielding calls from commercial urchin divers alarmed by kelp declines on nearby reefs. They took him by surprise. He had worked for an urchin diving crew while finishing his graduate degree and had seen first-hand the thick forests stretching for hundreds of acres under the waves.
 

High lead levels discovered in moss in Portland's older neighborhoods (KOIN)

As a result of WSJ’s investigation, researchers with Oregon State University and the U.S. Forest Service compared moss samples from Portland neighborhoods that were formed both before and after 1960. They explained that moss is an effective air monitoring system because it covers a wide surface area, and collects the contaminants surrounding it.

Cable installation to begin at wave energy test site (Newport News-Times)

The cables will support Oregon State University’s PacWave South, the first pre-permitted, utility-scale, grid-connected wave energy test site in the United States. When the facility is completed, wave energy developers will be able to test different technologies for harnessing the power of ocean waves and transmitting that energy to the local electrical grid.
 

Can Advanced Placement scores still be trusted? (Forbes)

The impact of recalibration has been closely observed by some members of the college community. Jon Boeckenstedt, Vice Provost for Enrollment at Oregon State University, produced a chart showing the score differences over time. From 2023 to 2024, a score of 1 (lowest) in the U.S. History test decreased from 30% to 8% and 4’s went from 16% to 33%. In U.S. Government and Politics, scores of 1 went down from 27% to 9%, 4’s went up from 11% to 25% and 5’s up from 12% to 24%
 

Warm waters are 'scrambling ocean life' on all sides of the United States (Oregonian)

In Oregon, the loss of the kelp forests is leading to changes big and small, from a drop in the commercial red sea urchin harvest to a decline in recreational fishing near the shore to the complete disappearance of red abalone snails. It’s like a forest with no trees, and nowhere for the snails and fish to live, said Sarah Gravem, a marine ecologist at Oregon State University.

The unexpected end comes years ahead of the scheduled expiration of the ship’s environmental impact statement, which offered a clean bill of health for the vessel until 2028. “Many in the community were sort of shocked by that decision,” says Maureen Walczak, a paleoceanographer at Oregon State University. “We sort of all assumed that it would continue to be supported through the end of that environmental impact statement.”

Expanded Opportunity: Oregon Sea Grant Natural Resource Policy Fellowship. The Oregon Sea Grant Natural Resource Policy Fellowship has expanded its eligibility to include both graduate and undergraduate students with relevant coursework or equivalent experience (see our webpage for more details on eligibility). Meditation Research Study: The OSU Edwards Social Cognition Lab in the School of Psychological Science is looking for volunteers to take a self-guided, online meditation course for eight weeks and complete some research tasks for a study. Automated Driving System research: The School of Civil and Construction Engineering and the School of Psychological Science are seeking paid volunteers for research studies. The purpose of this research study is to make Automated Driving System (ADS) vehicles safer for pedestrians with disabilities. To participate in one of the studies, you must identify as having a visual, hearing and/or mobility disability(s), and be at least 18 years old. Volunteers must commit 60 minutes to the research and will either wear a VR headset or a light-weight wearable device. Volunteers wanted for blackberry study (Corvallis): Seeking volunteers age 55 years and older who are not currently eating more than 2 cups of berries per week, do not have memory or learning disorders and do not take medications that affect focus and concentration. Turpin presented award for outstanding work: Lucas Turpin, executive director of digital extension and inclusion at Oregon State University, was presented with the prestigious Hugi Award for Exemplary Practice from NWACC. The Hugi Award Program recognizes individuals or groups in NWACC whose outstanding work in technology leadership, innovation, deployment or support has provided substantial benefit for their institution and potentially other NWACC institutions. Turpin was nominated for his work in deploying technology to increase digital equity across the state of Oregon while elevating OSU’s research enterprise and opportunities for lifelong learning.

Traffic and Maintenance

NEW! Full closure of intersection at 35th Street & Campus Way starting July 29: The City of Corvallis and OSU are collaborating on a project to improve the pedestrian crossing at SW 35th Street and SW Campus Way. The intersection will be fully closed from Monday, July 29 through Friday, Aug. 9. NEW! SW Memorial Place closed to traffic, including west sidewalk: As part of the Kelley District Utility Plant project, SW Memorial Place will be closed to vehicle and cycle traffic Aug. 1- Sept. 12. In addition, the west sidewalk of Memorial Place will closed to pedestrian traffic as well. (view map)  

NEW! Campus-wide steam shutdown: The Energy Center will be shutting down the Corvallis campus steam distribution operations from 5-11 a.m., Aug. 5 to correct primary distribution steam leaks and controls-related repairs. This process affects hot water supply, heating and all equipment that uses steam, campus-wide. For questions or comments on this closure contact Les Walton at 541-737-4395.

Weatherford: Construction activity related to the Weatherford A-wing Remodel project will occasionally impact areas outside the building through Aug. 30. Expected impacts include intermittent closure of the walkway on the west side of Weatherford Hall and partial closure of the bike parking area on the south side of SW Intramural Lane, across the street from Weatherford. These closures are needed for demo waste removal and materials staging. 

How We Are Saving a River


Restoring Ross Island: Years of industrial activity and a changing climate have created a situation where harmful cyanobacteria can build up in the stagnant waters of the Ross Island Lagoon. This can impact people and animals all along the river, posing serious health risks. Fortunately, this problem can be solved.
