A wet spring likely delayed the onset of the fire season in Oregon according to Nicholas Siler, assistant professor of climate science at Oregon State University and the assistant state climatologist for Oregon, but the dangers of wildfires and smoke continue to threaten communities across Oregon each summer. Will it happen again? Experts say it's possible, but according to Larry O’Neill, a state climatologist and associate professor at Oregon State University, a trifecta of harsh conditions made last summer’s heat dome so extraordinary.
For animals living in the woods of western Oregon, a log across a stream can act like Main Street. Videos captured by a pair of ecologists at Oregon State University (OSU), published earlier this month in the journal Biodiversity and Conservation, show dozens of species using logs from a stream-restoration project to eat, preen, and walk.
Kelsy Kretschmer, an associate professor of sociology at Oregon State University, and co-author of a study examining women’s voting patterns, says it’s not clear that the decision will be help Democrats in a measurable way. “A significant proportion of white women are conservative and form the backbone of the pro-life movement and this is the thing they often care the most about. For Democrats, if you lose half of white women, you don’t have a winning majority of women,” she said.
Jon Boeckenstedt, vice provost for enrollment at Oregon State University, analyzed colleges’ out-of-state populations after the Dobbs ruling in a recent post on his blog about higher-education data. “Politics or climate, whether it’s weather or political climate, has always played a role,” he said in an interview. “This might be a little bit different. I don’t necessarily think it’s the SCOTUS ruling. I think it’s more the states’ reaction and what it says, especially to young women but also to young men.”
“The future is hard to predict,” said Jeffrey Reimer, Oregon State University professor in the Department of Applied Economics. “It is possible a recession could come this year or in 2023, but it would require a reversal of some current trends. A recession would mean a massive slowdown in consumer spending, declining consumer demand and prices and a reversal of the strong labor market.”

This all leaves the church and its members in “an awkward position,” said Courtney Campbell, the Hundere Professor in Religion and Culture at Oregon State University. “It's one thing to tell church members they're supposed to be engaged in the political process to work against laws that allow for elective abortions,” he said. “It's a very different kind of political, moral and ecclesiastical matter when some of these laws restrict therapeutic abortions that the church permits.”

Crucial Conversations for Mastering Dialogue: This 10-hour course teaches skills for creating alignment and agreement by fostering open dialogue around high-stakes, emotional, or risky topics at all levels of your organization. By learning how to speak and be heard (and encouraging others to do the same), you’ll surface the best ideas, make the highest-quality decisions, and then act on those decisions with unity and commitment. Core Curriculum for OSU Managers and Supervisors: Managers and supervisors at OSU play a key role in enabling employees to do their best work. The Core Curriculum for Managers and Supervisors is a training program for all OSU managers, supervisors and lead workers. Impact the future of online education through research: Each year, the OSU Ecampus Research Unit funds projects up to $25,000 each to support the research, development and scholarship efforts of faculty in online education. Many OSU colleagues have had transformative experiences in the Ecampus Research Fellows Program. Recent Fellows studies highlight the ways in which these projects have advanced research in online/hybrid education. Driving study participants wanted: The OSU School of Civil and Construction Engineering seeks research study participants who are at least 18 years old and have a valid driver's license. Individuals with contact lenses or prescription lenses (-5.0 to +3.0) can participate in this study. The study purpose is to make intersections safer for bicyclists and reduce the potential for vehicle-bicycle collisions. Participants will be paid for their involvement, which requires a time commitment of approximately one hour and coming to the OSU Driving Simulator Laboratory. Dog study: The OSU Veterinary Teaching Hospital is seeking dogs that weigh more than 44 lbs and have a history of chronic diarrhea for a research study examining the effect of fiber on the fecal microbiome and gut health. Participation in this study involves mixing a powder supplement on the dog’s food daily for four weeks, three visits to the hospital and a $50 Amazon gift card.
