Study: Black-backed woodpecker can breed in burned or unburned forests (Birdwatching Daily)

A species of woodpecker once thought to limit itself to recently burned areas can breed successfully in the unburned parts of fire-prone landscapes too, according to a study by Oregon State University scientists. The research sheds new light on the Black-backed Woodpecker and holds key implications for improved conservation and forest management efforts.

After collecting a beetle at the ranch that didn’t resemble any species he was familiar with, Will called up Bembidion expert David Maddison, a professor of integrative biology at Oregon State University, to help identify the specimen. Together, the scientists used morphological and DNA analysis to confirm that the beetle represented a completely new species.

Art+Science Student Fellowships: This one-year fellowship offers OSU students the opportunity to explore the intersection of two disciplines. Fellows will develop a creative, journalistic or scholarly project informed by engagement with science and art, music, theater, multi-media or creative writing. Affordable Learning Grant: OSU's Open Educational Resources Unit is accepting proposals for the Affordable Learning Grant until May 19. The grant provides funding to adopt, adapt or author an open educational resource, such as a textbook. An open textbook is one that is published under an open copyright license and is made freely available online for students, faculty and the public. All funding is a department-to-department transfer. Research equipment reserve funds: In partnership with the Research Council, the Research Office is now accepting Research Equipment Reserve Funds (RERF) applications to strengthen the research infrastructure.
