Oregon churns out renewable energy, but needs batteries to store it (OPB News)

Some researchers, such as Oregon State University chemistry professor Xiulei “David” Ji are at the forefront of the research. Ji is leading a team across the country using a $3 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy to develop a sustainable, rechargeable battery. “It’s going pretty well,” he said. “We have observed some encouraging results, so I’m very hopeful.”
 

Far-off storms could be one cause of sneaker waves on Pacific Northwest beaches (Think Out Loud)

Superabundant dispatch: a sweet way to recognize Oregon's statehood (OPB News)

Even in a state known for its long rainy season, droughty summer weather can impact what we can grow and when. As OPB’s Elizabeth Castillo reports, that’s why farmers and plant science researchers are hard at work exploring crops suitable for dry farming, a technique for growing food without irrigation. Oregon State University’s Dry Farming Collaborative seeks to lead the way in both identifying productive Mediterranean varieties that can be grown without irrigation and uncovering new applications for the dry farming.

“Now her family is living in a dormitory provided to them by the government,” said Sahin, a visiting scholar with Oregon State University-Cascades in Bend. “She told me all homes have collapsed, everything in Kahramanmaras is flat. There are no buildings.”

The Bird Walk is back: We’re live and on campus, bringing back the Bird Walk in all its glory. School of Public Policy Basket Raffle: Buy some tickets to have a chance to win a variety of baskets put together by the School of Public Policy departments. Step challenge: Did you know that the average American only walks 3,000 to 4,000 steps a day? However, the CDC recommends that adults should aim for 10,000 steps per day. Do you know how many steps you’re taking a day? Let’s take steps together to help the hungry. All proceeds will be donated to the Linn Benton Food Share. Join the Virtual Steps Challenge and see how many steps you can get in. The top two individuals who have the most cumulative steps between Feb. 1-28 will each receive a gift card (donated by staff).

Breaking Barriers: Breaking Barriers is a celebration of the accomplishments and impact of those who have worked to advance gender equity at OSU. This event recognizes and celebrates the influential contributions made to our community. General scholarship: Applications for PCOSW scholarships to fund Winter and Spring term projects are now being accepted. The President’s Commission on the Status of Women provides funding to faculty, students and staff who are pursuing professional development, research, outreach or creative projects related to gender equity issues. The maximum amount offered is $1,000, although scholarships average $300, and funds are paid by reimbursement. Applications are due Feb. 19. Volunteer opportunities: Join us once or weekly for a volunteer service project at Heartland Humane Shelter & Care, Room at the Inn, Parks & Recreation, Starker Arts Garden for Education(SAGE) and Habitat for Humanity.
