Five ways to nurture compassion in kids (KQED)

An uncharted wilderness - Understanding hop compound biotransformation (Good Beer Hunting)

There are many reasons why biotransformation eludes the easy comprehension of seasoned industry professionals. Begin with the name. As Tom Shellhammer, the Nor’Wester Professor of Fermentation Science at Oregon State University, points out, “biotransformation” is a vague, slippery term that can refer to any general alteration of organic compounds - even fermentation itself (the production of ethanol by yeast).

OSU scientist studies slimy new way to count salmon (KTVZ)

“When we analyzed the environmental DNA sloughed into water from salmon tissues, including mucus and skin cells, we got very accurate counts,” said Taal Levi, an ecologist at Oregon State University and lead author on the study. “This is a major first step for more informed salmon management decisions because it opens up the possibility to affordably monitor many more streams than the few that are currently monitored.” (see also Phys.Org)

OSU researcher: Metabolic syndrome patients need more vitamin C (KTVZ)

Dangerous sneaker waves puzzle scientists (PhysOrg)

Researchers taking interest in these surprise events are starting to understand how they unfold. The data gathered so far suggests distant storms created the swells that drove the 2016 sneaker wave and another that occurred in early 2018, according to Chuan Li, a civil engineering graduate student at Oregon State University who presented his team's most recent work on the two massive waves last month at the 2018 AGU Fall Meeting in Washington, D.C.

Frog tongues hold secret to better adhesive (Mother Nature Network)

Key to what helps frogs' tongues catch - and hold onto - this prey is a special mucus that functions as a "pressure-sensitive adhesive," according to an Oregon State University news release. "This mucus is able to generate large adhesive forces in response to the high strain of retraction," said Dr. Joe Baio, assistant professor of bioengineering at Oregon State University.

The mother of all demos, 50 years on (Hackaday)

The Bush article was heady stuff to Doug Engelbart, whose undergrad studies at Oregon State University had been interrupted by his call to service. When he returned, he finished his degree in electrical engineering and made plans to marry his college sweetheart.

Having just 5-10 servings of fruits and vegetables daily may cut diabetes risk (NDTV)

"What these findings are really saying to people as we move out of the rich-food holiday season and into January is eat your fruits and vegetables," said Maret Traber, professor at the Oregon State University in the US. "Eat five to 10 servings a day and then you'll get the fibre, you'll get the vitamin C, and you'll really protect your gut with all of those good things," she added. (see also Technology Networks)

Arming school staff will pose risks to students that outweigh chance of shooting (The Globe Post)

By OSU's Michelle Barnhart and Aimee Dinnin Huff.

OSU research finds drinking less could help quit smoking (KEZI)

A new Oregon State University study found men who reduced their drinking, ended up smoking less. The study followed 22 adults who smoked every day and were also heavy drinkers.
