COVID-19 website: To facilitate the ongoing sharing of information about the virus, Oregon State University has added a link on the OSU homepage to a page that provides detailed and up-to-date COVID-19 information; links to OSU, local, state and federal resources; and updates on the latest federal travel restrictions.

TRACE OSU testing: TRACE OSU is providing random COVID-19 testing by invitation at its Corvallis and Bend campuses and at the Hatfield Marine Science Center in Newport. All faculty, staff and students, regardless of vaccination status, should continue with testing participation in TRACE. Testing will take place in Corvallis in the Memorial Union Ballroom and at Reser ticket booths, Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. In Newport, testing will be provided every other week, Monday through Wednesday, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. and Thursday 9 a.m.-2 p.m. At OSU-Cascades, testing is provided only to students living and working on campus, and employees working on campus. COVID-19 vaccine clinics: Weekly clinics at Reser Stadium in Corvallis are being collaboratively run by Samaritan Health Services, Benton County and OSU. These clinics will end June 10. Visit this website to schedule a vaccine. OSU-Cascades students, faculty and staff can learn where to find vaccines in Central Oregon here. Check your local public health authority websites for more information. OSU's TRACE project research expands to test for COVID-19 antibodies (KATU)

Oregon State University continues their research into how the coronavirus is impacting Oregon communities. On Saturday and Sunday, field crews involved in the TRACE project continued collecting samples from homes in Corvallis but this time, instead of just collecting nasal swabs, saliva was also collected to be tested for antibodies.

Women and minorities are often judged more harshly. In a study published last year by Regan Gurung, a professor of psychological science at Oregon State University, the same Black men were shown to observers wearing different outfits, from suits to hoodies and sweatpants. They were viewed as intelligent and trustworthy only when they were dressed formally, Prof. Gurung said, adding that other studies show white men don’t face the same prejudices.
 

Pilot project uses dogs to sniff out little cherry disease (Bend Bulletin)

In a draft survey by Oregon State University and Washington State University, growers across the two states reported removing 974 acres of sweet cherries due to the disease between 2015 to 2020, $115 million in lost revenue and costs. Because survey respondents manage only 26% of acreage across the region, experts estimate real losses are much higher.
 

OSU expert says virus variants are spreading, especially among the unvaccinated (KLCC)

As of today, roughly 66% of Oregonians 18 and older have had at least one dose of any COVID-19 vaccine. An expert at Oregon State University says that's not enough to help protect the less vulnerable, like children, the elderly and those with compromised immune systems. Brett Tyler also says the virus is mutating and becoming more dangerous, particularly in the unvaccinated population. And, yes, that includes children under 12.

"This is the first conclusive and consistent answer we have for all of Antarctica," said lead author Christo Buizert, an assistant professor at Oregon State University. "The surprising finding is that the amount of cooling is very different depending on where you are in Antarctica. Shared Responsibility Budget Model Campus Forum: The Corvallis Shared Responsibility Budget Model (SRBM), a modified responsibility-centered management (RCM) approach to allocating education and general (E&G) funds to academic and administrative units, is in its third year of use at OSU. The decision to implement the model included agreement that the model should be reviewed thoroughly every three to four years for potential improvements and adjustments. Sea Grant Scholar Program: Oregon Sea Grant Scholar Program has two new funded opportunities for graduate students and students who have recently completed a graduate degree. The 2021-2022 Oregon Natural Resource Policy Fellowship is a one-year, full-time position that provides hands-on experience in natural resource policy at the state level. Deadline: July 9. Call for proposals: Affiliate Faculty Research Incubator Program. Oregon NASA Space Grant Consortium has released our 2021 Affiliate Faculty Research Incubator Program call for proposals. AFRIP is designed to recruit faculty to become involved with OSGC and provide resources needed to develop student experiences in STEM disciplines. Projects should support NASA Mission Directorates and align with NASA’s top research priorities and areas of emphasis. Grant funding for open educational resources now open: Open Oregon Educational Resources, a statewide organization that promotes the use of OER, seeks grant proposals that implement high-impact, culturally relevant/inclusive, collaborative projects in support of open education and reduced textbook costs in lower-division courses. Grant applications are due July 9. Project timelines may vary, but all projects must be completed by June 1, 2023. Learn more and apply today.
 
Professional development for open educational resources: Want to make your course materials relevant and accessible for all students? Do you wish your course materials incorporated and supported the experiences of your actual students? Join a statewide Equity and Open Education Faculty Cohort. You can earn a $200 stipend upon completion of “Part 1: Explore,” and you’ll have the option to earn an additional $300 stipend in “Part 2: Implement.” Register online by June 14.

Traffic & Maintenance

Scheduled: Annual Steam Shutdown Campus-Wide. Each year Facilities Services performs necessary maintenance on the university’s steam system, which requires shutting off the steam throughout campus to complete maintenance services at the plant throughout the steam tunnels and in each building. This process affects hot water supply, heating and all equipment that uses steam, campus-wide. The steam shutdown for 2021 will occur June 13, 8 p.m. through June 17, 3 p.m. For questions or comments on this closure, contact Facilities Services at 541-737-2969. NEW! Executive Assistant: OSU’s chief audit, risk and compliance executive (CARCE) is recruiting an executive assistant to provide executive-level, confidential administrative support to the CARCE and to the Office of Audit, Risk and Compliance (OARC). The executive assistant will build connections and relationships in support of the CARCE’s work and the work of all the employees in the office. This is a key position in the OARC, setting a tone and ethic of the highest professional standard for the office. The executive assistant must exercise exceptional interpersonal communication skills, professionalism, collaborative approaches, diplomacy and good judgment in responding to institution representatives, the public and staff. This position requires strong organizational, writing and editing skills, and a high level of decision-making and judgment on complex and sensitive issues. This is a full time, 1.0 FTE 12-month position.
