OHSU, OSU research shows those recently released from prison at much greater risk of opioid overdose (KGW)

Drug overdose, especially with opioids, is a leading cause of death among people who have recently been in prison, not just in the United States, but around the world. A study by Oregon State University, Oregon Health & Science University and Oregon Department of Corrections scientists shows Oregon is certainly not immune.

The Oregon State University-born berry was derived from a cross between a few different cultivars and the Northwest’s native trailing blackberry (R. ursinus), but it doesn’t like Oregon’s cooler weather and like boysenberry, has mostly been relegated to the fields of California.

A sign of spring: Oregon State University has turned on its “Chick Cam” for the season. For the 10th year, people can watch chicks hatch via the OSU Extension Service livestream. The livestream started Friday and will continue until March 16.

Study underway to test sheep grazing's impact on invasive cheatgrass (Idaho Mountain Express)

The study is being conducted by an interdisciplinary team of researchers from Boise State University, Brigham Young University, Oregon State University, U.S. Forest Service range managers, and sheep producers who graze their animals on the Sawtooth National Forest.
 

OSU study: To help Oregon's dry forests, fire needs to be just right intensity, temperature -- and repeat (KTZV)

Oregon State University research into the ability of a wildfire to improve the health of a forest uncovered a "Goldilocks effect" – unless a blaze falls in a narrow severity range, neither too hot nor too cold, it isn’t very good at helping forest landscapes return to their historical, more fire-tolerant conditions.

NEW! Guitar Ensemble performance: At 7:30 p.m. March 15 in Community Hall 303, the OSU Guitar Ensemble will present a smattering of music spanning genres across space and time: traditional Chinese, romantic opera, final fantasy. Directed by Cameron O’Connor. Free, open to all, seating is limited.

Diffusions: A music technology concert: Join the OSU Music Technology and Production program for Diffusions, a live performance featuring EDM, pop and electroacoustic music composed and performed by students and faculty from the program. Directed by Jason Fick. 7:30 p.m. March 14 in Milam Auditorium. Free and open to all.

NEW! Care Talks, Caring for Aging Loved Ones: Declutter Your Older Loved Ones Home takes places at 10 a.m. March 15. Part of well home design is removing obstacles to better health. We’ll share tips on how to use principles from The Home Edit and Marie Kondo but with a twist for seniors living at home. This session also talks about “visitability” which is how to make your home age-friendly for visiting relatives and how to help seniors with “solastalgia,” the latest mental health issue for older adults based on living spaces. Register today.

NEW! Recruiting Polar STEAM Fellows for broader impacts: Polar STEAM is recruiting NSF-funded researchers for collaborations with educators, artists and writers to develop broader impacts related to polar research. For 2023, researchers may be field based, conducting remote data monitoring, or a combination of both. Educators will be virtual. For future years, Polar STEAM will expand to include field deployments for educators, open applications to artists and writers and continue supporting virtual collaborations. Visit the Polar STEAM website and FAQ section to learn more and apply. Priority deadline for the 2023 field season is March 31.
