The pandemic sparked shutdowns, warnings and pushback around the U.S. that are eerily similar to the fallout from the coronavirus outbreak in Las Vegas and other cities more than 100 years later. “Suddenly it’s so relevant,” Christopher Nichols, director of Oregon State University’s Center for the Humanities, said of the World War I-era outbreak. "It's actually nice out today and I have the day off work," he said. "I'm just trying to get everybody out of the house." His wife, two kids and their dog Chili could finally revisit the Oregon State University-owned forest for a long-awaited hike since the coronavirus pandemic began.

 

OSU-Cascades student teachers learn how to educate remotely (Bend Bulletin)

There are both advantages and setbacks to student teaching remotely, said graduate students in Oregon State University-Cascades’ education master’s degree program. But this group of future teachers will be extremely prepared to lead their own classrooms due to these difficult circumstances, said Rachael Schuetz, a senior instructor in the university’s teaching program.

Revamping mail delivery in a new reality (LIFE@OSU)

While most employees and students have left the Oregon State campus in Corvallis because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the mail keeps coming. And coming. That created a problem. With almost no one on campus to receive the mail, who would make sure it reached its destination? OSU’s Printing and Mailing Services solved that problem. And Lori Englehardt and her mail room team led the effort.

Faculty & Staff COVID-19 Disaster Relief Fund Under IRS Code Section 139: In collaboration with the OSU Foundation, Oregon State University is offering emergency financial assistance grants through the OSU Faculty and Staff COVID-19 Disaster Relief Fund. The purpose of this fund is to help regular classified and unclassified employees in our university community with unexpected needs during this unprecedented time of the COVID-19 pandemic. All classified staff, professional faculty and academic/research faculty are eligible regardless of service time or FTE. An individual must be actively employed on the date of grant distribution. Read more about the details of the program here. Student hourly employees, graduate assistants, and stipend recipients (e.g., fellows) are not eligible. Engineering awards: The Engineering Student Council is introducing Dam Distinguished.
