Today in the News Media is a synopsis of some of the most prominent coverage of OSU people and programs. Inclusion of any item constitutes neither an endorsement nor a critique, but rather is intended only to make the OSU community aware of significant items in the media.
We use our brains to do things like math and to teach things like enumeration and construction and optimization; and joining us to talk about how we can do that better is Elise Lockwood, an associate professor of mathematics education at Oregon State University. Then at 1 p.m. there will be a lecture by Distinguished Professor of Chemistry, Mas Subramanian, entitled The Surprising Science of Discovery: Stumbling Onto a New Colorful Materials World. Finally, at 3 p.m. there will be a lecture by Distinguished Professor of Integrative Biology, Virginia Weis, entitled In Sickness and In Health: Studying Coral Symbiosis in the Age of Climate Crisis. Little Gallery exhibit: The Little Gallery, World Languages and Cultures presents: Re-Imagining Multilingualisms at OSU, an exhibition of creative works by students of LING 251, Languages of Oregon (State University). The exhibit will be open for viewing on May 6-17 with three days of student presentations: May 13, 15, and 17 from 9 to 9:50 a.m. The creative works reflect the topics of the course including social justice issues around language bias and discrimination on OSU’s campus as well as ways to envision a more linguistically just future. Connection Session: The Research Office is organizing a connection session Monday, May 13, from 3:30 to 5 p.m. at Hallie E. Ford Center, Bray Conference Room HFC 114. The Victorians’ Queer Collections: Megan Ward teaches in the School of Writing, Literature, and Film, and her current research project explores the world-making properties of Victorian literary realism as an early form of virtuality that connects it with the contemporary digital archive. In this talk, she’ll discuss how looking to the Victorian novel’s queer collections outside the conventions of archiving — such as hoarding, counterfeiting and wasting — can help us re-examine our archival methods, especially the notion of the archival “find.” Monday, May 13, 4 p.m., OSU Center for the Humanities, Autzen House, 811 S.W. NEW! 2019 Ideas Matter Series on the Philosophy of Food: “The Moral Standing of Animals in Buddhist and Euro-American Philosophy.” Geoff Barstow is a religious studies assistant professor whose research focuses on the practice of vegetarianism and animal compassion in Tibetan Buddhism. Bjørn Kristensen is a master’s candidate in applied ethics at OSU. His research is at the intersection of animal ethics and environmental justice. In his talk, he will give an overview of the concept of speciesism, and discuss several philosophical perspectives on the moral status of nonhuman animals. Monday, May 13. NEW! Island Soldier: The Micronesian Islander community will host the “Island Soldier” movie event at the Asian & Pacific Cultural Center. The event will begin with a movie screening of the documentary, “Island Soldier,” directed by Nathan Fitch. The documentary highlights the experiences and untold stories of Micronesian soldiers. After the film, there will be a panel of Micronesian soldiers answering questions. The event will take place on Wednesday, May 15, from 5 to 7:30 p.m.

Mental Health First Aid: Mental Health First Aid is an eight-hour course that teaches you how to help someone who is developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis. Pew Scholars Program in the Biomedical Sciences: The program provides funding to young investigators of outstanding promise in science relevant to the advancement of human health. The grant level is $300,000 - $75,000 per year for a four-year period. For the 2020 award, one nomination will be invited from each of the participating institutions. Scheduled: Campus Wide Steam Shutdown: Each year Facilities Services performs necessary maintenance on the university’s steam system, which requires shutting off the steam throughout campus, to complete maintenance services at the plant, throughout the steam tunnels and in each building. This process affects hot water supply, heating, and all equipment that uses steam, campus wide. The steam shutdown for 2019 will occur from 6 p.m. on June 16 to 5 p.m. on June 20.
