A research team led by Oregon State University is planning to develop a new rechargeable battery that could reduce the need for environmentally destructive mining of rare minerals like nickel and lithium and accelerate the clean energy transition. (see also OPB)

Predicted La Niña has central Oregon skiers and snowboarders excited for winter (Oregonian)

“We’re going into fairly similar conditions as last winter,” said Larry O’Neill, director of Oregon Climate Services at Oregon State University in Corvallis. “It might be slightly weaker than last year, but probably not significantly different as far as La Niña goes. Right now we’re in a weak La Niña, but it’s just on the edge of being a moderate one. Last year we were barely into the moderate one.”

Book Club: Join the Association of Faculty and Staff for the Advancement of People of Color (AFAPC) for a book club reading of “The Matter of Black Lives,” a collection of The New Yorker’s writing on race in America with a foreword by and edited by Jelani Cobb, 2023 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemoration keynote speaker. Beaver Boosters: OSU will be providing COVID-19 booster clinics on the OSU Corvallis campus, Tuesday, Nov. 15 through Thursday, Nov. 17, from noon to 4 p.m. in Memorial Union Room 62. Clinics are open to the public and will provide updated bivalent boosters for individuals 5 and older, plus COVID-19 vaccine for ages 6 months and older, while supplies last. Student Health Advisory Board: OSU students, do you care about the health and well-being of the OSU community? Do you want to get involved in administrative processes and have an impact? Are you interested in being a voice for students in health initiatives? Apply to join the Student Health Advisory Board (SHAB). Applications are due Nov. 28 at 5 p.m.: SHAB Application 2022-2023.

Call for applications: Faculty are invited to participate in implementing the new general education curriculum approved by the Faculty Senate in October. We seek 40-50 faculty volunteers to develop the learning outcomes, criteria and rational (LOCRs) for the new curriculum. These faculty will serve on 10 workgroups, one for each category. There are two main roles: LOCR developers and LOCR mentors. Application deadline is Nov. 16. Free COVID tests: Free iHealth COVID-19 Antigen Rapid Tests are available on the Corvallis and Bend campuses and at the Hatfield Marine Science Center in Newport. Each box contains two tests. While supplies last, OSU community members can pick up these self-test kits without restrictions. Please note the FDA has extended the self-test kit expiration dates by six months.
