Farming with solar panels (by accident) (Jefferson Public Radio)

Oregon State University agriculture researchers were not trying to create a dual-use farm, but they discovered that an installation of solar panels provided shade in which certain grasses grew on dry farmland without irrigation. 
 

Tastemaker: Food designer Sarah Masoni's million-dollar palate (CBS)

Masoni wasn't just getting a head start on Thanksgiving; she was demonstrating her job as a "food designer," at Oregon State University's gleaming Food Innovation Center. Hundreds have paid big dollars to get Masoni's culinary counsel, making sure their new food products are both safe and sumptuous.

Chris Goldfinger, a professor and earthquake geologist at Oregon State University, said the earthquakes serve as a reminder that we live in a subduction zone but are nothing to worry about.

Panel Discussion: Transitioning from Grad School to Academia, Government, or Industry: Postdocs and early-career scientists in various career paths will be available for questions related to their transition, including: applications, interviews, starting a new position, etc. This event is hosted by the OSU Postdoctoral Association and Postdoc Mentor Program, open to all OSU members, and will be held Monday, Nov. 19, at noon in LPSC 402. 

Department of Integrative Biology Seminar: Samantha Lewis, senior postdoctoral fellow at UC-Davis, will present a seminar, “Regulation of Mitochondrial Genome Distribution within Human Cells,” on Monday, Nov. 19, 3:30 p.m. in ALS 4001. Faculty-Led Study abroad: Join faculty members in Public Health and Human Sciences to learn about faculty-led options for study abroad and internships. Psychological Science colloquium: A fall term series of talks by faculty, students, affiliates and guests of the School of Psychological Science at OSU. Anita Cservenka of OSU will speak on “Marijuana use and cognitive functioning in young adult college students,” Nov. 19, 4-5 p.m., Reed Lodge 219. These colloquia offer an informal venue to discuss completed and ongoing research of broad interest. MLK Celebration: Sybrina Fulton, mother of Trayvon Martin, author and advocate for social justice is the keynote speaker for the 37th annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration lecture on Mon., Jan. 21, at 11 a.m. at the LaSells Stewart Center. Through Dec. 5, free tickets are available to OSU faculty, staff and students for the Jan. 21 peace breakfast and the keynote session. Beginning Dec. 6, keynote session tickets will be available to the general public. The celebration week runs from Jan. 19-25. Bexell Hall Landscape Input Sessions: Join the College of Liberal Arts and the award-winning Portland-based landscape architecture group Place for an information session on the upcoming exterior renovation to Bexell Hall’s landscape. Among many projects, Place’s landscape architects designed the “Elephant Lands” at the Oregon Zoo, as well as the Swarovski Crystal World park in Austria. NEW! Noise Control Plan: Are you exposed to loud noise at work?  Find out more about OSU’s Hearing Conservation Program and Noise Control Plan.  The goal of OSU’s Hearing Conservation Program is to monitor and protect employees who have the potential to develop noise-induced hearing loss – a preventable, permanent and progressive health issue. In collaboration with Environmental Health & Safety, Occupational Health Services provides annual hearing tests for those exposed to loud noise on the job.  Training is available through the EH&S website.  Contact Occupational Health or Environmental Health and Safety with questions.

Help Create a Vision for the Corvallis Campus: Oregon State is embarking on an 18-month process to develop a physical vision for the future of the Corvallis campus. The  Physical Development Strategy will reflect the university’s values and vision from the Strategic Plan 4.0. Share your thoughts in an interactive survey. We’re looking to craft a development strategy that supports an environment that enhances your best OSU experiences, and also leads to a more welcoming and inclusive campus. All responses are anonymous and confidential and will only be used for the purposes of this project.

Heroes sought: The Professional Faculty Leadership Association is seeking nominations for the Our Hero Award to recognize individuals who have gone above and beyond while exhibiting leadership skills. PFLA membership is not required of the nominator or the nominee. Pet owner survey: The Oregon State University Human-Animal Interaction Lab is looking for pet owners to take a survey examining pet behavior and the human-pet relationship. The purpose of the survey is to assess how pet owners perceive the bond they have with their pet. If you are 18-plus years old and own a pet you are eligible to participate. For individuals who own more than one pet, the survey can be taken multiple times (once for each pet) or a single time for a pet of your choice. AWSEM clubs: Registration for STEM Academy’s AWSEM (Advocates for Women in Science, Engineering, and Math) clubs for sixth- through 12th-graders is open. AWSEM clubs are designed to nurture girls’ interest in STEM by providing a program of hands-on activities paired with women STEM role models. Middle school club meets on Tuesdays, 5-6:30 p.m., from Jan. 15 through Feb. 19. Staff Art Exhibit: This is the ninth year of the Staff Art Show, which is looking for representation from all parts of OSU in this showcase of creativity. Do you have creative individuals in your area (maybe even you)? Most any medium is accepted in this exhibit, so register your submissions of work by Nov. 26. The benefits, besides showing talent beyond the day-to-day job, are that departments are listed on the artist’s block next to the work.
