TRACE OSU testing: OSU is providing random COVID-19 TRACE OSU testing by invitation for students, faculty and staff Monday-Thursday weekly on the Corvallis campus and Monday-Thursday every other week on the OSU-Cascades campuses and at the Hatfield Marine Science Center in Newport. Free parking will be provided to those working remotely to come to the Corvallis campus for testing. OSU-Cascades takes on COVID-19 in Science Pub (Bend Bulletin)

Oregon has experienced record numbers of COVID-19 cases in recent days, but it can learn from looking at other countries that have done a good job of containing the spread of the virus. That’s the opinion of Oregon State University professor Chunhuei Chi, who is also OSU’s director of the Center for Global Health in the College of Public Health and Human Sciences. Chi will lead a virtual discussion from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Monday.

Researchers at Oregon State University are in the midst of a feeding trial to assess how feeding spent hemp biomass to lambs affects cannabinoid residuals in meat as well as animal health and performance.

Crop and Soil Science: The Department of Crop and Soil Science Fall Seminar Series continues on Monday, Oct. 12, 4 p.m., with a presentation entitled “Constraining the Mechanisms that Influence the Retention and Persistence of Fluorinated Organic Chemicals in Soil,” by Thomas Wanzek. Wanzek is currently a Ph.D. student in the Soil Science graduate program. Wanzek will argue that fluorinated organic chemicals are pervasive and persistent in soil systems and determining precise retention mechanisms is vital to identification and remediation of contaminated ecosystems. From NFL star to athletic organization founder: The Changemakers live webcast series, hosted by the OSU Alumni Association, kicks off its first episode with Jacquizz Rodgers. Following a successful football career with the NFL, the Beaver alumnus founded the Jacquizz Rodgers Foundation to benefit student-athletes and local families. Join the conversation with CLA Professor Susan Shaw and Rodgers at 5 p.m. Monday, Oct. 12. Later this fall, learn about the accomplishments of state Sen. OSU and Hop History Events: Every week this October, OSU Special Collections & Archives is highlighting history via presentations that offer up glimpses of student cinematic imagination, perspectives on the crop that makes Oregon “Beervana,” and a look at documenting aquaculture on film. Board of Trustees: The OSU Board will meet on Friday, Oct. 16, from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. The board will consider the revised budget for the fiscal year, an adjustment to fall term 2020 student incidental fees, the president’s goals for the fiscal year, and the board’s work plan for the next calendar year. The board will hear a report on advancing equity, inclusion and social justice within OSU, and a legislative update. Mindfulness-based Nature Journaling Series: Join us on Monday afternoons in November to enjoy a “conversation with nature” by slowing down to focus on drawing from observation and recording your experience in a nature journal. These sessions will help participants build a toolbox of ways in which they can continue reflecting nature and expressing themselves in their own personal journals once class ends. Opportunity for Student Engagement on OSU’s Tuition and Budget: Have you always wondered how the university sets tuition and determines budget priorities? We are looking for students to join the Student Budget Advisory Council (SBAC). SBAC is a student group that serves in an advisory role to the University Budget Committee (UBC). The SBAC gives students the chance to engage with peers to provide input, raise issues and ask questions about OSU’s tuition, fees, finances and budget priorities. The University Budget Committee considers the SBAC’s input an important part of tuition and budget decision processes. SEIU Admin Class/Comp Survey: During bargaining SEIU and management agreed to review the class and compensation system for the Administrative Support job family class and the Accounting Tech/Payroll Tech specifications. This includes all Admin classifications, OS classifications and payroll tech or accounting tech.

Monthly Emergency Preparedness Topic: Earthquake - Experts predict that the Cascadia Subduction Zone earthquake will occur within our lifetime. The projected magnitude is 9.0, with shaking lasting for 5-7 minutes. The Oregon coast will also experience a tsunami (30-40 foot wave) that follows the earthquake. Announcing FYI Friday Workshops for Faculty and Staff: The annual Training Days event coordinated by University Human Resources will be modified this year due to the limitations on physical gatherings during COVID-19. In place of the in-person two-day conference normally scheduled in November, this fall UHR will be piloting a new program called FYI Friday. The FYI Friday program is similar to Training Days, in that it is a platform for various university groups to share information with the OSU community. And, for greater accessibility, FYI Friday sessions will be presented remotely, on Fridays throughout the year. Stay tuned for upcoming session announcements in OSUToday.
