Oregon’s public university workers voted to authorize a strike late Sept. 17 if the union and universities’ representatives can’t reach an agreement on a new contract in negotiations by Monday, Sept. 23. Classified workers for the state’s seven public universities would officially start the strike Sept. 30, according to an announcement from their union SEIU 503, which represents 4,500 public university workers. Art sale: An art sale that runs through Sept. 26 at the Hatfield Marine Science Center in Newport will benefit the conservation of Oregon’s estuaries. Thirty-three pieces, created by Northwest artists, are on display at the Oregon Sea Grant-operated Visitor Center at Hatfield. A portion of the sale of each piece of art will support The Wetlands Conservancy’s efforts to protect the state’s estuaries. The art is part of the 175-piece Ode to the Tides art show and sale, which debuted at OSU in May. Oregon Sea Grant is one of the sponsors. Learn more: bit.ly/305F6Ds

Art faculty show: Oregon State University’s Fairbanks Gallery of Art is hosting an exhibit of work by members of the art faculty throughout August and September. New Safety Awards, nominations being accepted: The University Health & Safety Committee desires to recognize OSU members who are taking extra steps to promote health and safety, and to reduce accidents, incidents and injuries to employees, students or visitors. The new Safety Recognition Program provides a medium to recognize faculty, staff and student employees for their positive behaviors and actions. Examples might include actions, programs, safety achievements or an approach that places safety at its forefront. Nominations will be open for submissions via online at https://ehs.oregonstate.edu/announcement/safety-award-nominations
and reviewed once per term (excluding summer.)

Mindful After Cancer (MAC) study: At least half of breast and gynecologic cancer survivors face sexual difficulties, and there are few resources to help. Prior research suggests that mindfulness training along with education can make a positive difference in cancer survivors’ well-being, body image, relationships and sexual well-being. Women who were diagnosed with stage 1-4 breast or gynecologic cancer at least two years ago are invited to participate in the free MAC program online, from the privacy of their homes. The program is eight weeks long, with an online group meeting each week for 1½ to 2 hours. Participants will fill out an online survey before and one month after the program ends, and will get $20 for each survey completed. To find out more, go to health.oregonstate.edu/research/projects/survivorship/mac, or email [email protected] for more information. This study is being conducted by the College of Public Health and Human Sciences. The principal investigator is Jessica R. Gorman.

Launch Academy nominations and new scholarship: Faculty and staff are invited to nominate creative, problem-solving, critically thinking students to join Launch Academy, a course for students of all majors who have ideas for services, products or community change. Launch Academy students have access to funding, mentorship, co-working space, travel grants and prototyping support. Apply now for the OSU Ecampus Research Fellows Program: If you are interested in conducting research about online teaching and learning, the OSU Ecampus Research Unit will help you plan your proposal for the Ecampus Research Fellows Program. The OSU Ecampus Research Unit annually funds up to five faculty and/or department projects, $20,000 each, to support research in the areas of distance and online education, including hybrid delivery. Momentum: Materials science has long been a signature research area of the College of Engineering and an important tenet of its recently refreshed Strategic Plan 2020-2025: Creating a Better Future. Whether the goal is improving existing processes or creating something entirely new, materials science brings together expertise in mechanical, electrical, optical, magnetic and chemical properties to build things smarter, safer and stronger. In the fall 2019 issue of Momentum, the college highlights a few of the innovative approaches Oregon State Engineers are taking to precisely tweak critical properties of the materials used to power our lives.

Rec Sports Membership: Rec Sports memberships are now available for purchase. To enjoy membership benefits, individuals must have a direct relationship with Oregon State University. (This includes faculty, staff, associates, affiliates, e-campus students and OSU alumni). Faculty and staff may register for payroll deduction through Friday, Nov. 1. Students who have paid the full OSU Incidental fees for the Corvallis campus automatically receive membership.

Rec Sports Fall Program Sales and Locker Rentals: Rec Sports members are now able to register for fall DAM Fit High-Intensity Interval Training classes as well as purchase Group Fitness and Intramural Sports passes. In addition, members are now able to purchase locker rentals for various durations by visiting Dixon’s Rec Services desk. Members with pre-existing rentals are able to renew locker rentals online.

Student Support at the Undergrad Research & Writing Studio: The Undergrad Research & Writing Studio, located in the Valley Library, encourages faculty to hold class meetings in the studio and take advantage of its flexible workspaces, including modular tables and large display monitors suitable for collaboration. Studio consultants (peer mentors who specialize in research and writing support) are available to work with students during the visit. PFLA open to all university employees: The Professional Faculty Leadership Association welcomes anyone who works at the university and provides a forum for those currently in or aspiring to a leadership role. PFLA supports Professional Faculty at OSU through education, connection, recognition and advocacy. PFLA members strive to be the best leaders, managers and colleagues possible. Traffic and Maintenance

Water shutdown in Gilbert Addition: Sept. 23, 8 a.m. to noon. The water will be shut down in the Gilbert Addition for plumbing repairs.
