Oregon State University associate professor of economics Dr. Paul Thompson says this is good for high school kids, but shows a negative impact for younger grades. “Elementary and middle school students they’re not really missing as much time for things like extracurriculars as high schoolers are,” Dr. Thompson said. “So those motivations aren’t really fitting with that age group of students and we’ve seen the big achievement declines happening for those students.” (see also Good Morning America)

“All crops are sort of like Goldilocks, they do really well within a certain range of temperatures,” said Stuart Reitz, director Oregon State University’s Malheur Experiment Station. If temperatures get too hot or too cold at the wrong stage of their growth, plants can shut down.

Search advocate: Apply your equity, inclusion, access, belonging and social justice values to employee searches. OSU Search Advocates comprise a community of trained content-neutral external process advisors who work with search committees to advance equity, validity, and diversity through the search and selection process. Registration to present at the Fall Virtual Showcase (FVS): Open now through Oct. 11. FVS is a virtual, asynchronous opportunity for OSU undergraduates to share their research and creative projects with the OSU community Oct. 23-25. Undergraduates from all academic disciplines, in all years of study and at all stages of work are invited to present. We will have an in-person kickoff event in the MU from 5-6 p.m. on Oct. 23. Monthly Emergency Preparedness Topic: Preparedness Kits. Preparedness kits help bridge the emergency or disaster until normalcy can be restored. Kit recommendations range from 24 hours to 72 hours to 14 days, from personal to vehicle to workplace and household sizes. The difference between the kits is the quantity of items (more for longer periods of time), size of storage container and types of items (immediate survival versus long-term living). Research Advancement Academy: Applications for the 2023-24 Research Advancement Academy and seed funds program are due Sept. 22. The Research Advancement Academy prepares early- and mid-career faculty to successfully lead large, transdisciplinary proposals and funded research programs. It includes a set of workshops over fall and winter terms and the opportunity to apply for up to $50,000 in seed fund support in spring (see schedule here). $15K of funding available: The OSU Advantage Accelerator is seeking applications that describe technology-based projects in any discipline that will move OSU-owned technologies closer to commercialization. Proposals should describe a project that requires $15,000 or less of funding to achieve an important milestone connected to commercialization. Each project may be awarded up to $15,000 and should span nine months or less, beginning in October 2023. Proposals are due by 5 p.m. Friday, Sept. 29. Learn more and apply.

NEW! LaSells parking: As part of the LaSells Stewart Center Mechanical & Roof Renewal Project, a section of SW Stadium Avenue, located directly behind The LaSells Stewart Center and just south of Bloss Hall, will be closed to allow for crane activity from 7 a.m.-2 p.m., Sept. 18. The entrance to SW Stadium Ave. from SW Western Boulevard will be closed. Both the east and west sidewalks on Stadium Ave., directly behind The LaSells Stewart Center, will be closed. A vehicle detour will be available from Western Blvd. along the east and north side of the LaSells Stewart Center East parking lot. The LaSells Stewart Center East parking lot (#3259) will remain open during this closure.
NEW! Sidewalk closure, Kelley Engineering Center: As part of the Kelley District Utility Plant project, construction activity will impact the east entrance of Kelley Engineering Center through mid-October. The east entrance will remain open during construction. In addition, a section of the sidewalk along SW Memorial Place, directly in front of the east entrance, will be closed from Sept. 18-22. Pedestrians will be directed across Memorial Place to the east sidewalk.
ADA crosswalk ramp: As part of the Cordley Renovation Project, a new ADA crosswalk ramp will be installed at the northeast corner of NW 27th Street and NW Orchard Avenue. A pedestrian and ADA detour will be in place with appropriate signage.
Kerr south parking lot: As part of the Kerr Administration South Parking Lot Improvement project, the Kerr South parking lot will be closed for construction activities from June 26-Sept. 27. The path running along the west side of the Kerr Administration Building will be closed along with the south entrance/exit to the parking lot and the ADA ramp. Other possible impacts include noise, dust and mud near the construction site.
