Which college campuses have the fastest wi-fi? (PC Magazine)

According to Ookla, the average wi-fi download speed in the US was 81.91 Mbps during Q1 to Q2 of 2018. The top three fastest tested schools came in well above that. Oregon State University was the winner with a download speed of 128.90 Mbps. It was followed by Utah State University at 125.46 Mbps and Yale University at 124.74 Mbps.

In the 12th-annual review of U.S. colleges and universities based on environmental responsibility, Oregon State University ranked No. 15, closely followed by its Pac-12 rival University of Oregon at No. 16, and Lewis and Clark College at No. 17. Only California, with four, had more in the top 20 than Oregon.
 

Genetically modifying trees (Think Out Loud)

A recent field study out of Oregon State University demonstrated that trees can be genetically engineered to prevent new seedlings from establishing. Steve Strauss, a distinguished professor of biotechnology at OSU, discusses the findings from the largest aggregate study of genetically engineered trees in the world.
 

Rare fossils-inside-fossils show prehistoric parasites (National Geographic)

This isn't the first fossil parasite ever found. Scientists previously discovered fossilized nematodes, tongue worms, parasitic flies, and more. But it's exceedingly rare to find an ancient parasite still inside its host, notes George Poinar, a paleobiologist at Oregon State University who was not involved in the study.
 

Baylor College of Medicine uses wristbands to detect hazardous chemicals left over from Hurricane Harvey (CW 39)

A year later and recovery from Hurricane Harvey is still ongoing, and so are the questions about possible health effects from exposure to contaminated flood water and airborne health hazards, such as mold. Researchers at Baylor College of Medicine, UT Health and Oregon State University have been awarded three grants from the National Institutes of Health to continue working to identify what dangers might have been in the flood waters, and new participants are needed as well as those who have already taken part in the study.
 

High wildfire severity risk seen in young plantation forests (Science Magazine)

Researchers in the College of Forestry at Oregon State University used satellite imagery and local data to analyze the factors driving differences of severity in the fire, which burned about 50,000 acres north of Grants Pass.
 

Oregon author challenges 'cowboy myth' in novel about girl's quest (Oregonian)

John Larison studied creative writing at Oregon State University and worked as a fishing guide while developing as a writer. His third novel, "Whiskey When We're Dry," is set in 1885 and follows a 17-year-old girl across the West as she searches for her outlaw brother.
 

How far do you have to run after a small modular nuclear meltdown? (Forbes)

It turns out you don’t have to run at all. First, they really can’t melt down. Second, the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission just agreed that any emergencies that could possibly occur at a small modular nuclear power plant probably won’t even get past the fence. The brain-child of Dr. Jose Reyes, NuScale’s Chief Technology Officer and nuclear engineering professor emeritus at Oregon State University, this modular reactor takes advantage of the small in small modular.
 

Latest buzz on saving bumblebees? Finding their favorite foods (Patch)

The study, by Oregon State University's Department of Fisheries and Wildlife with funding from the Oregon Zoo Foundation, suggests that by determining what plants bumblebees enjoy the most, not only will the bumblebee population be helped, it could result in a cascading effect that will also assist farmers and other land managers.

Ocean scientists discover hundreds more methane seeps off PNW coast (OPB)

Oregon State University geophysicist Bob Embley said the discovery is “eye-opening” on many levels. Until a few years ago, researchers had only documented 200 methane seeps off the Pacific Northwest coast.
 

Job market ripe for college graduates (Bend Bulletin)

Makeila Lundy finished her computer science degree in June. By the end of summer, the Oregon State University-Cascades graduate had been hired in Bend by Systema, a German-owned company specializing in automation for manufacturers.

NEW! The Laramie Project Auditions: Twenty years ago on Oct. 12, 1998, Matthew Shepard died as a result of a hate crime in Laramie, Wyoming. In collaboration with OSU's Pride Center and Out 'N About, Jennifer Edwards is directing a performance of a play based on the crime on Oct. 19 at OSU. Audition/informaton sessions for those interested in participating will be held at 6 p.m. Sept. 6 and 7 in Bexell 211. OSU Standard Updated:  Oregon State University will take written comments on its proposed update to OSU Standard 576-060 Alcoholic Beverages, through the end of business on Sept. 21.  The purpose of the comment period is to receive public feedback regarding updating and replacing the existing standard on alcoholic beverages on campus with University Standard 07-005 Alcoholic Beverages. Update from Student Leadership & Involvement: The Student Sustainability Initiative (SSI) merged with the Center for Civic Engagement (CCE). This is a result of the two units being part of Student Leadership & Involvement, sharing similar goals and missions, and sharing physical office space in the Student Experience Center Suite 206. Moving forward, CCE is a unit focused on utilizing civic engagement and community-engaged learning as the tool and strategy for students to work towards a more just, sustainable world and develop their leadership capacity to create positive change. SSI’s most impactful and successful programs will continue under the CCE umbrella; this includes Growing Food Security, Waste Watchers, EcoReps, and Adopt-A-Bottle. Toy donation:The Family Resource Center’s annual Joy Drive, a long-standing initiative helping students provide gifts for their children during the winter holiday season, is changing this year. In creating an inclusive student support program that reaches the greatest number of students with children, we are opening a year round gift closet so student parent families may “shop” for any holiday, or even their child’s birthday. The Joy Drive is now the Kid’s Gift Closet; spreading the joy throughout the year. Help is needed to stock the closet.
