There aren't enough young farmers. Congress is looking to change that (NPR)

As big distributors and producers faced supply chain snags during the pandemic, more people turned to their local markets and sellers to purchase foods they couldn't find at the grocery store. Even as many supply chain disruptions have eased, demand has stayed high, according to Heidi Noordijk, small farm coordinator at Oregon State University.
 

Too much blue light can accelerate aging ... at least for flies (NBC News)

Because the signaling chemicals in the cells of flies and humans are the same, this discovery suggests another possible way blue light can harm people, said lead author Jadwiga Giebultowicz, a professor in the department of integrative biology at Oregon State University. Tom Shellhammer of Oregon State finds fertile ground in the terroir of hops (Beer and Brewing Podcast)

Tom Shellhammer’s research has been crucial for helping brewers, as well as barley and hop growers, gain deeper understanding of brewing ingredients and how they actually work. As a food science professor at Oregon State University, he’s led critical studies, including a well-known study on hop creep. His latest project is a wide-ranging, multiyear study to understand the impact of terroir on hops, and the results of the first year of the study have just become available
 

Oregon State University creates instructional toolkit for Common Application (Diverse Issues in Higher Ed)

Oregon State University has created a free online resource to help students with college applications. The resource launches on Sept. 1. AXS Companion – developed with the Independent Educational Consultants Association (IECA) – includes instructional videos for the Common Application, a college application platform used by more than 1,000 colleges and universities in 50 states and 20 countries.  (see also KEZI)
 

Growing up with a dog can be good for children's health and happiness, study finds (MSN)

For example, animal behaviorists at Oregon State University studied the behavior of dogs mimicking the movements of their child companions—and 60 percent of the time, they were completely in sync, even more so than with adults. Researchers reported "the great news is that this study suggests dogs are paying a lot of attention to the kids that they live with…and children are very capable of training pet dogs, and that dogs are willing to learn from them." 
 

OSU College of Forestry partners with Oregon tribes to restore lands and support underrepresented students (OPB News)

Last month, Oregon State University College of Forestry announced it had hired alumna Cristina Eisenberg as director of tribal initiatives. The new position aims to partner with tribes in Oregon and the region on restoration projects and recruiting Native American students.

An Evening with Keb’ Mo’: The American Strings series will host Americana and blues musician Keb’ Mo’ for a live on-campus event in Corvallis on Thursday, Oct. 6, and in Beaverton at the Patricia Reser Center for the Performing Arts on Friday, Oct. 7. The American Strings series brings in musicians from a range of genres for an evening of conversation about their career, followed by a live performance. It is hosted by Bob Santelli, university director of popular music and performing arts. Loan forgiveness: Oregon State University is a qualifying employer for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program. Crucial Conversations for Mastering Dialogue: This 10-hour course teaches skills for creating alignment and agreement by fostering open dialogue around high-stakes, emotional or risky topics at all levels of your organization. By learning how to speak and be heard (and encouraging others to do the same), you’ll surface the best ideas, make the highest-quality decisions, and then act on those decisions with unity and commitment. This program consists of a series of five live, online sessions on Thursdays 10 a.m. to noon, Oct. 6 through Nov. 3. NEW! Monthly Emergency Preparedness Topic: Preparedness Kits. Preparedness kits help bridge the emergency or disaster until normalcy can be restored. Kit recommendations range from 24 hours to 72 hours to 14 days, from personal to vehicle to workplace and household sizes. The difference between the kits is the quantity of items (more for longer periods of time), size of storage container and types of items (immediate survival versus long-term living). NEW! $15K of Funding Available: The OSU Advantage Innovation Impact Program is currently seeking applications that describe technology-based projects in any discipline that will move OSU-owned technologies closer to commercialization. Proposals should describe a project that requires $15,000 or less of funding to achieve an important milestone(s) connected to commercialization. Each project may be awarded up to $15,000 and should span nine months or less, beginning in October 2022. Proposals are due by 5 p.m. Sept. 20. Basic Needs Statement for Syllabus: Help-seeking is a skill set and the entire OSU community can help promote seeking help and conversationally break down the internal barriers that often prevent students from doing so early or at all. The Basic Needs Center community appreciates how often professors and instructors are talking about the BNC with their classes as part of their goals to be student-centered faculty members. To support this, staff can find updated language ready for copy-pasting into syllabi and some additional context for how to approach this conversation with classrooms on the BNC website.

Funded Professional Development for Instructors and Tenured/Tenure-Track Faculty: Join the Center for Teaching and Learning’s Fall ’22 resilient teaching community of practice. This cross-disciplinary learning community will use live discussions and online resources to explore pedagogical strategies to adapt to the changing teaching and learning landscape, and to build resilience into teaching practices. See the call for participation and submit a brief application by Sept. 7.

Call for Blended Learning Fellowship Nominations: The Center for Teaching and Learning is accepting nominations and self-nominations for a 2022-23 Blended Learning Faculty Fellow. The Fellow will have opportunities to be involved in faculty development around blended learning, and will support CTL’s strategic goals of enhancing student success while developing a culture of teaching innovation. Free COVID tests: Free iHealth COVID-19 Antigen Rapid Tests are available on the Corvallis, Bend and Newport campuses. Each box contains two tests. While supplies last, OSU community members can pick up these self-test kits without restrictions. Traffic and Maintenance

NEW! Full road closure for section of U.S. 20: ODOT is working on a construction project to build a retaining wall, realigning and reconstructing a portion of the road and repairing damage caused by landslides on Hwy 20. Work includes fixing the road surface from milepost 55.4 to milepost 55.6 and milepost 56 to milepost 56.2 to create a smoother ride and prevent water from pooling. If you use this route for work at OSU-Cascades, research, field work or other travel, note that a two-week full road closure is scheduled Sept. 9-22. Detour information is available online. Expect daytime single lane closures Monday through Friday from 6 a.m.-6 p.m. through October 2022.

Parking lot closures: For work related to the 2022 Summer Parking Lot Renewal Project, multiple parking lot and roadway closures along SW Intramural Lane are scheduled. The Intramural lot (lot #3294) will be closed Aug. 18-Sept. 9. The N. 16th St. East lot (lot #3224) will be closed Aug. 18- 31. The N. 16th St. West lot (lot #3223) will be closed Aug. 18-Sept. 14. SW Intramural Lane will be closed between SW 30th Street and SW 26th Street for the duration of the project (view map)
