Melinda Manore, a professor of sports nutrition at Oregon State University who has consulted for Clif Bar in the past, says that the idea of a healthy bar versus an unhealthy bar is not as black-and-white as Kind’s website might imply. “There’s a time and place for different kinds of food,” she says.

Duo Sign Up Events: The Duo team will have walk-up events for employees to sign up for Duo, get questions answered, and obtain a token if needed. NEW! Budget conversation: On Thursday, April 11, at noon, the Office of Budget & Fiscal Planning will hold another University Budget Conversation in the Memorial Union Room 215. This week’s topic is about the current year and longer-term budget outlook. The Budget Conversations sessions are limited to 60 minutes and are an open forum structure with the initial 15-20 minutes spent on presentation of the topic, leaving time for discussion and Q&A. TRIAD: John Deuel, Recycling Program manager at OSU, will present “OSU’s Trash is Talking: What story is it telling us now?” on Thursday, April 11, noon to 1 p.m. in MU 211. Green Legacy Hiroshima Peace Tree. Join Corvallis Mayor Biff Traber to plant a Green Legacy Hiroshima Peace Tree, grown from a tree that survived the nuclear bombing of Hiroshima on Aug. 6, 1945. The Peace Tree will be dedicated to Oregon Hiroshima survivor Hideko Tamura Snider. The ceremony will be followed by refreshments and a facilitated discussion about nuclear weapons. Thursday, April 11, 4 p.m. Asian & Pacific Cultural Center.

"Say What?!" comics presentation: Join the GradSWE on Thursday, April 11, at 6 pm in KEC 1001 for an evening with Niv Sundaram, senior director of engineering at Intel in the Data Center Group and creator of "Say What?!" Comics (https://www.facebook.com/saywhatcomics/). Sundaram will share how she has leveraged her love of comic strip writing to facilitate uncomfortable conversations on race, gender, and bias, and used comics as a powerful tool to educate and build trust more effectively than typical training sessions. She will also discuss strategies for building a career in tech and leadership development. A lightly catered reception will follow the presentation. All are welcome at this free event.

Race and Racism in Contemporary Cuba: The School of Language, Culture, and Society, College of Liberal Arts, and the Office of Provost present a public talk by internationally acclaimed scholar-activist and cultural investigator Roberto Zurbano (Casa de las Americas, Havana, Cuba).  This is his only Pacific Northwest stop on his U.S. tour. Thursday, April 11, 7 p.m., CH2M HILL Alumni Center Willamette Room. Free and open to public.

Mariachi music: The OSU Minorities in Agriculture, Natural Resources and Related Sciences (MANRRS) Chapter will be hosting a Mariachi Band from Woodburn High School during Ag Day (Tuesday, April 16), with music at 11am on the quad in front of the MU. There will be a Krispy Kreme fundraiser selling a dozen original glazed donuts for $12 or one donut for $1. If you are interesting in securing your dozen, fill out the Krispy Kreme Order Form. Pick up will be at the OSU MANRRS booth in the SEC PLAZA April 16 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.. NEW! Artwork of Shelley Jordon: The artwork of Oregon State University professor of art Shelley Jordon is on display in the Fairbanks Gallery of Art through April 25. Jordon, who teaches painting and drawing in the School of Arts and Communication in the College of Liberal Arts, is a painter and moving-image artist who explores interior and exterior worlds and connections between past and present experiences. Using traditional drawing and painting media applied to two-dimensional artwork, animation and installation, Jordon expresses the complex nature of memory; physical and emotional, collective and personal. Her recent paintings and animations meditate on the passage of time, the power and beauty of nature and the cycle of life. Fairbanks Gallery is in Fairbanks Hall, 220 SW 26th St., on the OSU main campus. It is open 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Prospective student open house: Spring preview, an open house program for prospective students, will be in CH2M and the Memorial Union on Friday, April 12. There will be approximately 800 to 1,000 guests on campus, which may impact parking and retail food locations. Welcome the guests while they are on campus.

Trek Theatre: Trek Theatre of Eugene presents its only Corvallis performance of the classic Star Trek episode: "Space Seed." The crew of the Enterprise encounters a sleeper ship that contains one of the most dangerous and renowned villains of the Star Trek universe - the genetically enhanced, super-tyrant Khan Noonian Singh.  With this performance, Trek Theatre continues to perform science fiction community theater that raises important questions about the role of science and technology in contemporary culture and society. Admission is free and open to the public. Monday, April 15, from 7-8 p.m., MU Ballroom.

Earth Day of Service: Celebrate our planet with us through service, on Saturday, April 20, for our annual Earth Day of Service. We have a variety of environmentally focused projects focusing on both conservation and restoration. Some of the projects this year are: Dunawi Creek Habitat Spring Cleaning, Willamette Tree Park Clean-Up, Mary's River Gleaners (bike brigade)  and Tree Planting at Bald Hill Farm. Sign up to participate in a project. 

Spring Career Fair: On Wednesday, April 24, connect with some of the best employers in the country at the 2019 Oregon State Spring Career Fair. OSU Supplier Showcase and Expo: The OSU Supplier Showcase & Expo is brought to you by Procurement, Contracts and Materials Management and University Conference Services. Outreach and Engagement Vice Provost Awards for Excellence event: Celebrate the outreach and engagement work of OSU at the Vice Provost Awards for Excellence event. Ten projects from across the university will be recognized on May 2, 3:30 to 5 p.m., followed by a hosted reception, 5 to 6:30 p.m. in the MU Ballroom. There is no cost to attend. NEW! Monks, Mystical Diaries, and Queer Kinship: Join us at the Center for the Humanities for a talk by Tekla Bude, assistant professor in the School of Writing, Literature, and Film. Bude’s research focuses on ways medieval writers were influenced by and influenced the study of music, arithmetic, geometry, and astronomy. Her new book project investigates forms of "silent" or "metaphysical" music from 1300 to 1550. In this talk, she’ll discuss how the diaries of two 15th-century Carthusian monks manifest musical expressions of their affection and desire for one another. The fifth annual Pacific Northwest Undergraduate Religious Studies Conference showcases the work of student researchers from Oregon State University, the University of Puget Sound, Linfield College, Willamette University, and Lewis and Clark College. Presentations range widely from Islamic architecture, Tibetan Buddhism, and resurrection in Orthodox Christianity to the religious symbolism of Star Wars, the ethical shortcomings of the war on drugs, and the religious roots of the American penal system. Invitations to Attend Accreditation Open Forums: Classified staff, faculty (academic and professional) and students are invited to attend their respective open forums on Monday, April 15, or Tuesday, April 16, during the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU) visit to OSU next week. IMPACT STUDIO SESSIONS: Join Rich Duncombe, Impact Studio director, on April 18 from noon to. 1 p.m., in MU 215 Thought Lab for a conversation about the 2019 Impact Studio initiatives. Duncombe will open with a summary of the three new initiatives being pursued in 2019 and an overview of the Impact Studio development process. This will be the first studio session of a series being offered every three months to discuss the active initiatives in our portfolio and broader topics relating to how to lead adjacent innovation inside of Oregon State and other successful institutions.

OSU Health and Safety Committee - The University Health and Safety Committee invites campus members interested in health and safety to attend our open meetings, held semi-annually in May and October. Traffic & Maintenance 

Scheduled: Campus Wide Steam Shutdown: Each year Facilities Services performs necessary maintenance on the university’s steam system, which requires shutting off the steam throughout campus, to complete maintenance services at the plant, throughout the steam tunnels and in each building. This process affects hot water supply, heating, and all equipment that uses steam, campus wide.  The steam shutdown for 2019 will occur from 6 p.m. on June 16 to 5 p.m. on June 20.
