As land acknowledgments become more common, Indigenous people grapple with next steps (Think Out Loud)

Luhui Whitebear, assistant professor in the Oregon State University School of Language, Culture, & Society, says land acknowledgments should be the beginning of an organization’s work with tribes, not the end. Whitebear helped to craft OSU’s land acknowledgment. We hear from her and Rachel Black Elk, junior instructor for the Indigenous Nations Studies program at Portland State University.

California created the nation's first state reparations task force. Now comes the hard part (Los Angeles Times)

Estimates suggest at least 500 enslaved people lived in California during the Gold Rush, said Stacey Smith, a professor of history at Oregon State University. “It was one thing for the California Constitution to declare that slavery would not be tolerated,” Smith told the task force in September. “It was quite another thing to actually criminalize slavery, emancipate enslaved people, punish slaveholders, and give Black people protections for their freedoms.”

Oregon Health Authority director: 'We know almost nothing about omicron' (The Canby Current)

This week, scientists working on Oregon State University’s wastewater project, which has been tracking the spread of Covid across the state, will start to look for Omicron in those samples.

Are this week's earthquakes normal activity, or a sign of worse things to come? (KCBY)

"That fault, the Blanco Fracture Zone, is constantly moving. It links two segments of the offshore spreading center where new crust is created, so that fault basically has to move continuously. So it'll be quiet for a few weeks or a month and then it'll have a few earthquakes. This is a bigger than average group, but also pretty common," says Chris Goldfinger, Professor of Marine Geology and Geophysics at Oregon State University. (see also CNN, KMTRKUOW)
