Sunflower sea stars could help save kelp forests (Earth dot Com)

There is now growing interest in understanding how to control sea urchin numbers and encourage the recovery of kelp forests. With this in mind, a research team including scientists from Oregon State University, the University of Oregon, the University of Washington and The Nature Conservancy has undertaken a study into the feeding habits of sunflower sea stars, focusing particularly on whether they will consume the starving sea urchins that are typical of barren ecosystems and, if so, how fast can they eat them.

OSU-Cascades set to launch innovative student career planning program this fall called Cascades Edge (KTVZ)

Oregon State University–Cascades announced Wednesday it will launch a novel program this fall called Cascades Edge that integrates career preparation into coursework for all students, to prepare them for success in their future careers.
 

Small businesses have large impact (The Telegraph)

The second consideration is the charitable giving by businesses. The research conducted by Oregon State University for the Small Business Administration found that small and mid-sized businesses with fewer than 100 employees give an average of $789 per employee in cash and in-kind donations to the community. On the other hand, larger businesses with over 500 employees give only $334 per employee on average, which is nearly 60% less than the amount given by smaller and mid-sized businesses.

Lost City, Living Memories: Vanport Through the Voices of Its Residents: Floodwaters from the Columbia River destroyed the predominantly Black neighborhood of Vanport on Memorial Day in 1948, displacing thousands of residents and killing numerous others in the flood waters. The Oregon Trail: University Theatre and the Memorial Union present The Oregon Trail, by Bekah Brunstetter. It’s 1997 and a middle-schooler finds herself trapped in the computer lab, playing “The Oregon Trail” game. The game comes to life and juxtaposes the students’ modern struggles with those of her great-great grandmother, who traveled the Oregon Trail in a covered wagon in 1848. 7:30 p.m., Feb. 23-24 and March 2-3, and 2 p.m., March 5, in the Memorial Union Ballroom. Corvallis-OSU Piano International presents: Sofya Gulyak, From Russia and England. Golyak won the 2009 Leeds International Competition First Prize and was the first woman to win the Princess Mary Gold Medal.
