Oregon coast whale beachings part of larger trend as oceans undergo 'profound changes' (Oregonian)

The coastline from Alaska to Mexico has seen an increase in gray whale strandings since 2019, according to Jim Rice, stranding program manager at the Oregon State University Marine Mammal Institute. Of the whales stranded since 1989, 57 were found in the past five years – around 24% – with 19 of those whales beached in 2019 alone.

“Opening the cores was like seeing different parts of the country through an 8-by-200-millimeter soil snapshot,” said Adrian Gallo, who was tasked with doing many of the initial core analyses and who recently completed his Ph.D. in soil science at Oregon State University.
 

Oregon State University warns students, public of man 'persistently' following women (KATU)

OSU Public Safety said the incidents happened on January 30 and February 1. They report that an unknown man followed women in multiple locations on the campus. He did not threaten or physically engage with the women, but was said to have caused significant discomfort and concern.
 

OSU-Cascades looks to add more degree programs, presses lawmakers to fund new Bend campus building (KTVZ)

At Bend's OSU-Cascades Campus, there are plans to further expand academic programs into more fields of endeavors. But the school is also urging lawmakers to provide state funding for a new building, which was not in Gov. Tina Kotek's recently announced budget proposal.
 

OSU kicks off statewide seed kit giveaway (KLCC)

The “Grow This!” Oregon Garden Challenge is led by Food Hero, an initiative of the Oregon Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program’s Education project. The program was started by OSU Extension, which provides research-based knowledge to local communities.
 

Air quality monitoring expanded in Gorge: Measurements in Gorge inform (Columbia Gorge News)

That 2020 fire was a galvanizing moment for Lauren Kraemer, an OSU Extension faculty in The Dalles. “It felt like a public health crisis on top of COVID,” she said. At points during the fire, the Gorge had the worst air quality in the world.

The Bird Walk is back: We’re live and on campus, bringing back the Bird Walk in all its glory. School of Public Policy Basket Raffle: Buy some tickets to have a chance to win a variety of baskets put together by the School of Public Policy departments. Recruiting participants for virtual reality experiment: Seeking participants who are at least 18 years old, speak fluent English and have normal or corrected-to-normal vision for research aiming to explore perception and movement in real and virtual environments. Participants will complete movement- and perception-based tasks for around one hour. Those who complete the study will receive $15 in Amazon credit. Media training: OSU’s Office of News and Research Communications has recently restarted in-person media training sessions. The half-day sessions are designed to build participants’ understanding of the media, develop interviewing skills through mock interview sessions and increase confidence in working with journalists. Provost’s Literary Prize: The 35th Annual Provost’s Literary Prize for undergraduate students at OSU is open for submissions. The winner will be awarded $500 and on-campus publication. Jennifer Richter in the School of Writing, Literature and Film and the screening committee are seeking help from faculty to identify candidates for the prize. The literary work can be fiction, poetry or creative nonfiction written for general audience. Please direct students to beav.es/5by for submission requirements. The deadline for submissions is Feb. 25. The winner will be announced in May. 

Interdisciplinary Student Fellowships: This one-year fellowship offers OSU students the opportunity to develop a creative, journalistic and/or scholarly project at the intersection of one of four tracks: Art+Science, Art+Engineering, Humanities+Science or Film+Science. Fellows will be awarded $1,000, engage in ongoing networking and professional development opportunities with faculty and community mentors and be eligible to apply for a residency at the cabin at Shotpouch Creek. Free Middle School Women in Science Workshop: Discovering the Scientist Within, is a program designed to nurture sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade girls’ interest in the STEM fields and consists of activities paired with adult women scientist role models.
