According to the university, a vaccine stimulating the production of a protein critical to the skin’s antioxidant network could help people bolster their defenses against skin cancer. Arup Indra, a professor of pharmaceutical sciences at OSU, explained that the ultraviolet radiation from the sun leads to oxidative stress, which increases the risk of skin cancers such as melanoma. “We observed for those pregnant women within one kilometer of drilling that there’s about a 5 percent increase in odds of gestational hypertension, and 26 percent increase odds of eclampsia,” Mary Willis, a postdoctoral scholar at Oregon State University and one of the authors of the study, told DeSmog. “So, it’s this really close range where we are seeing a potential impact right on women’s health.”
Surenda Dara, a University of California Cooperative Extension advisor with more than 25 years of experience in research and extension, has been selected to lead Oregon State University’s North Willamette Research and Extension Center in Aurora. He will start Jan. 18. (see also Capital Press)
As detailed in a new study published in the peer-reviewed Journal of Natural Products by researchers from Oregon State University and Oregon Health & Sciences University, the scientists were looking for a biological compound that could bind with the spike protein of the SARS-COV-2 virus, which causes COVID-19. (see also Q&A with Vice, Oregonian, FOX17)
As for Oregon State University, Vice President Steve Clark is more optimistic. "The Omicron variant is very serious, but we think we can continue to provide safety and wellness with the measures we have. And at this time, we do not plan to go to remote learning." (see also KCBY)
This webinar series in December was organized by Juliana Ranches, Assistant Professor and Beef Extension Specialist at Oregon State University. This first edition of RancHER was developed to bring information to beef cattle producers by highlighting the work of talented women in the beef industry. The program was sponsored by the OSU Women’s Giving Circle, and was free for attendees.
Gorge robotics students from The Dalles, Dufur and Hood River swept Tournament Champions, Excellence, Judge’s and Community Service awards at the Dufur Hat Tip to Service VEX Robotics Tournament that took place in November. Because of their wins, System Overload, $5 Footlong and Pyrotechnics have qualified for Oregon State VEX Championship extending their journey as they seek to qualify and compete in the VEX Robotics World Championship in May 2022.

ADA task force: OSU has convened an Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) task force to review the policies, programs and systems in place to support a culture of inclusiveness and compliance with the ADA, and make recommendations regarding ongoing effectiveness and needed improvements. The task force welcomes information from students and employees regarding their experiences with and ideas about physical/building and wayfinding accessibility, information technology (IT) accessibility, and accommodations. Funding Available for Students to Attend Washington & Oregon Higher Education Sustainability Conference: Community Engagement & Leadership and the Sustainability Office is offering OSU students an opportunity to attend the 2022 Washington & Oregon Higher Education Sustainability Conference (WOHESC) taking place March 2-4. Funding is available for up to 8 students to participate virtually and up to 4 students to attend in person at South Seattle College. Call for art: The Reading Room is launching a Call for Art to match the themed collection Metamorphosis and invites you to submit a work of art for display. NEW! Reser parking lot Zone 2 closure: For work related to the Completing Reser Stadium project, an extended parking closure is scheduled in the Zone 2 area of the Reser Stadium parking lot. The far west passage lane in the parking lot near Oak Creek behind Reser Stadium’s west side will remain closed for continuing cleanup of the implosion debris (view map). The extended closure is scheduled to last through Sunday, Jan. 16.
Reser: For work related to the Completing Reser Stadium project, southbound traffic along SW 26th Street near the entrance to the Reser Stadium Parking lot will be diverted into the northbound lane while excavation and pipe installation work is occurring in the closed lane. Flaggers will be used at three locations to separate vehicular traffic from construction workers and equipment. SW 26th Street, access to the Reser Stadium parking lot and adjacent lots will be accessible. All lanes of traffic will reopen at end of shift each day. Construction activities and lane closures will occur between 7 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. daily from Jan. 10-14. (view map).
West Greenhouse: As part of the 20 & 21 West Greenhouse project, a portion of sidewalk will be closed to pedestrian traffic between SW 30th and 35th streets on SW Campus Way for ADA access and sidewalk improvement work. The month-long closure is scheduled to start on Friday, Jan. 7 and continue through Feb. 7. Please view the online map, which provides an overview of this location and appropriate detours to take. Direct access to the 20 & 21 greenhouses can be made at their north side doors.
Graf Hall: As part of the Graf Hall Renovation Project, a section of sidewalk on the north side of Graf Hall will be closed for excavation work for a new sidewalk and building entry. During the closure, pedestrian traffic will be routed to the north side of Monroe Avenue (view map). The closure takes place now through Jan. 14.
