Have you spent time pondering how birds, butterflies and salmon know how to get back home after they’ve traveled far far away? Scientists at Oregon State University have, and M. Renee Bellinger completed her Ph.D in fisheries science with a study on how they used the Earth’s magnetic field to navigate.
That’s because samples first need to be collected, filtered, preserved and packaged statewide, then sent to Oregon State University for processing, Layton says. Researchers at Oregon State test each sample first to zero in on the prevalence of COVID in a particular community and then to sequence which variant is driving cases.
Oregon State University Professor Chunhuei Chi says those qualities could make Omicron the variant that pushes the virus from pandemic, to endemic: “Omicron might be the virus that helps us end this pandemic. To turn it into an endemic, or the so-called flu-like. Myself, I’m waiting for maybe another month of epidemiology data.”

According to Jim Meyers, horticulture professor at Oregon State University, tomatoes, squash and melons establish deep root systems quickly and draw moisture from deeper soil long after the soil surface has become dry in midsummer.

The Academic Success Center’s 7-Day Study Plan and Make It Stick – Practice! handouts are helpful tools you can share to encourage effective study strategies and distribute study over time. Giving students time in class to ask questions and plan study times and strategies can motivate students to begin midterm study early.

Crafternoons: The OSU Valley Library is hosting Crafternoons during Winter Term 2022. Crafts will be available in the second floor foyer. Corvallis Transit System Service reductions, effective Jan. 24: Due to an ongoing shortage of drivers, Corvallis Transit System is forced to reduce service beginning on Jan. 24 until further notice. This reduction will affect Routes 5, 6, 50, and Route 1 Peak P.M. Additional drivers are being hired and as soon as they are fully trained, CTS will return to regular service. West Greenhouse: As part of the 20 & 21 West Greenhouse project, a portion of sidewalk will be closed to pedestrian traffic between SW 30th and 35th streets on SW Campus Way for ADA access and sidewalk improvement work. The month-long closure is scheduled to start on Friday, Jan. 7 and continue through Feb. 7. Please view the online map, which provides an overview of this location and appropriate detours to take.
