Fish slime could be new source for antibiotics, according to latest study (FOX 2)

The team, which consists of a collaboration between Oregon State University and California State University Fullerton, studied the bacteria that gets collected in the protective mucus that coats a fish.

The OSU Extension Service is excited to announce a gift of a 167-acre forest property near Gold Hill to the OSU College of Forestry for use as a teaching, research and demonstration forest.

Mom’s Day Plant sale: The OSU Horticulture Club will be selling hanging baskets and potted plants Thursday, May 9, and Friday, May 10, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. We will be located on the south side of Greenhouse No. 12 on Campus Way near the Ag and Life Sciences Building.

Vertical University: Come learn about this Nepalese nonprofit that is creating the world’s first “Vertical University.”  KTK-BELT co-founders will be giving a presentation about how they use Traditional Ecological Knowledge to create a new model of biodiversity conservation and environmental education in rural Nepal. This event is open to all of the OSU community and will be held in Richardson Hall 107 on May 9 from 11 a.m. to noon.

OSU Libraries and Press Awards: On May 9 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the main floor rotunda of the Valley Library, OSU Libraries and Press will celebrate employee excellence and present several student awards, including the Totten Student Awards, the Alice Kathryn Kidder Outstanding Student Awards, and the Kathryn Kenyon Library Student Employee Scholarship. All are invited to attend.

Budget conversation: The Office of Budget & Fiscal Planning will hold another University Budget Conversation on Thursday, May 9, noon in MU 215. This week’s topic is about the Internal Bank led by the director of Treasury. The Budget Conversation sessions are limited to 60 minutes and are an open forum structure with the initial 15-20 minutes spent on presentation of the topic, leaving time for discussion and Q&A. We encourage you to bring your lunch and join the conversation and to learn more about OSU’s budgeting and fiscal matters. NEW! Site of Sound: Site of Sound (@Truckenbrod Gallery) presents a conceptual performance by percussionist Matt Hannafin. Hannafin performs music at the intersection of contemporary performance art, sound, voice and music. Works include: John Cage, Vanessa Tomlinson, Alvin Lucier, and Danny Clay. Little Gallery exhibit: The Little Gallery, World Languages and Cultures presents: Re-Imagining Multilingualisms at OSU, an exhibition of creative works by students of LING 251, Languages of Oregon (State University). The exhibit will be open for viewing on May 6-17 with three days of student presentations: May 13, 15, and 17 from 9 to 9:50 a.m. The creative works reflect the topics of the course including social justice issues around language bias and discrimination on OSU’s campus as well as ways to envision a more linguistically just future. On view: M-F 8 a.m. to noon and 1-5 p.m. Free and open to the public.

Hopkins Demonstration Forest: The public is invited to take a walk on the wild side at the Hopkins Demonstration Forest in Beavercreek, just 15 miles south of Oregon City. On May 18, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., two wildlife experts will lead the tour through the 140-acre demonstration forest, teeming with wildlife and spring growth. This event is free, but space is limited. Register online. 

Day of Caring: This year, the Center for Civic Engagement invites everyone in the community to join us on Saturday, May 18, for our annual Day of Caring. Oregon State students, staff, faculty, and their children/dependents are invited to participate in this event and celebration. Distinguished Professor lectures: All faculty, staff and students are invited to attend the 2019 Distinguished Professor lectures on May 13 in the MU Horizon room. Early Seral Biodiversity Science & Management Workshop: A presentation of scientific findings on early seral forests in the PNW. Grads Give Back: Donate Your Gown to the Next Graduate: Are you graduating and walking in commencement? Give your gown after the ceremony. You can help another student who may not be able to participate in commencement otherwise while keeping your cap and cords as a memento. Pew Scholars Program in the Biomedical SciencesThe program provides funding to young investigators of outstanding promise in science relevant to the advancement of human health. The grant level is $300,000 - $75,000 per year for a four-year period. Student nominations sought: The Oregon Association of Scholars (www.oregonscholars.org) seeks nominations for first annual Oregon Campus Freedom Awards presented in Salem in June. Awards recognize Oregon college students who promoted free speech, viewpoint diversity, equal opportunity, due process rights, and student rights to dissent from orthodoxies. Traffic & Maintenance 

Scheduled: Campus Wide Steam Shutdown: Each year Facilities Services performs necessary maintenance on the university’s steam system, which requires shutting off the steam throughout campus, to complete maintenance services at the plant, throughout the steam tunnels and in each building. This process affects hot water supply, heating, and all equipment that uses steam, campus wide. The steam shutdown for 2019 will occur from 6 p.m. on June 16 to 5 p.m. on June 20.
