Gonorrhea: Oregon State University researchers closer to a vaccine (Outbreak News Today)

In a study of proteins historic in its scope, researchers at Oregon State University have pushed closer both to a vaccine for gonorrhea and toward understanding why the bacteria that cause the disease are so good at fending off antimicrobial drugs. (see also KVAL)

#10: Corvallis. A major institution in Corvallis is Oregon State University, one of the city's largest employers. OSU created the Oregon State University Advantage that forges connections between the business and academic communities to bring ideas to the marketplace. Among the companies with a presence in the city is computer maker Hewlett-Packard, which has a research campus in Corvallis. Hewlett-Packard employs about 1,700 people in Corvallis.

CORE Reports for Late-Term Proactive Advising: The end of the term is in sight, but a student may need that final boost or some targeted information to cross the finish line or take the next step. This workshop looks at resources around late-term proactive advising to make sure students succeed and are ready for next term. Science Fiction and Social Justice: Black Mirror Episode Viewing: The ECC and the Anarres Project for Alternative Futures will be hosting a Black Mirror episode viewing, where we will watch and discuss social justice themes presented in the episode. Artist talk: Artist Philip March Jones will speak at 4 p.m. Nov. 14 in the Fairbanks Gallery of Art on Oregon State University’s Corvallis campus. For nearly 15 years, Jones, a New York-based artist, writer and curator, has worked daily on a series of drawings, paintings, writings and collages in small workbooks that he carries with him.  The talk is free and open to the public. The gallery is on the first floor of Fairbanks Hall, 220 SW 26th St.

Fiddle choir: The touring fiddle choir Childsplay will perform at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 14 in The LaSells Stewart Center, 875 S.W. 26th St., on the Oregon State University campus in Corvallis. Led by violin maker Robert Childs, Childsplay is comprised of more than 20 musicians from around the U.S. and Ireland, with each member of the string section playing a violin or viola handmade by Childs. Board of Trustees: The Executive and Audit Committee of the OSU Board of Trustees will hold a telephonic meeting from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 16, to consider a recommendation of potential candidates for an anticipated trustee vacancy, the board’s 2020 calendar, and an audit progress report. The committee also will receive the annual compliance and ethics program report, an annual Office of General Counsel report, and a legislative update. Prospective student open house: Beaver Open House, an open house program for prospective students, will be in LaSells Stewart Center and the Memorial Union on Saturday, Nov. 17. There will be approximately 1200+  guests on campus, which may impact parking and retail food locations. Please welcome the guests while they are on campus.

Vienna Boys Choir: The Vienna Boys Choir will perform two shows, at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m, in Corvallis on Saturday, Nov. 17, in the First United Methodist Church, 1165 N.W. Monroe St. Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door for adults, and $10 in advance and $15 at the door for youth through age 18. OSU students are free with ID while there is seating available. NEW! Pet owner survey: The Oregon State University Human-Animal Interaction Lab is looking for pet owners to take a survey examining pet behavior and the human-pet relationship. The purpose of the survey is to assess how pet owners perceive the bond they have with their pet. If you are 18+ years old and own a pet you are eligible to participate. For individuals who own more than one pet, the survey can be taken multiple times (once for each pet) or a single time for a pet of your choice. NEW! AWSEM clubs: Registration for STEM Academy’s AWSEM (Advocates for Women in Science, Engineering, and Math) Clubs for sixth- through 12th-graders is open.
