Study by Oregon State researchers suggests water birth is a safe option (Think Out Loud) 

For people with healthy, low-risk pregnancies, water births are associated with better outcomes overall than non-water births. That’s according to Oregon State University researchers who have conducted the largest study of water births to date. (see also KEX

'Green crab numbers have reached a critical point': Invader spells trouble for Coos Bay (KVAL)

The number of invasive green crabs in the Coos Bay region continues to grow - and are likely to impact Dungeness crabs and coastal habitat, according to a new report by researchers at South Slough National Estuarine Research ReserveDungeness crab is Oregon's most valuable commercial fishery. The report is part of an ongoing study by scientists from the South Slough Reserve and Oregon State University.
 

Drought conditions expected to persist despite recent rains (KLCC)

“In 16 out of the last 22 years, Oregon has received below average precipitation statewide. So if it has seemed like Oregon has been drier than normal, it sure has been," said Larry O’Neill, director of Oregon Climate Services at Oregon State University. "And the last two years have been well below normal, so this really makes this a multi-year drought.”

At Oregon State University, some faculty have been teaching using that format. Other schools across the nation have been attempting this too as the pandemic continues. And some colleges began experimenting with the model way before the pandemic, in the mid 2000s.

Battles for Belonging: Race, Citizenship and Exclusion in the Pacific Northwest and Nazi Germany. This panel will analyze how racially and religiously motivated persecution and exclusion affected minority groups in Europe and the Pacific Northwest. Women of Color discussion: The AYA Women of Color Initiative at the Hattie Redmond Women and Gender is teaming up with Shaznin Daruwalla and Chanale Propst from Counseling & Psychological Services to host this discussion group for women of color on campus to be able to talk about academics and personal life. University Budget Committee: The Committee will meet this Friday, Nov. 19 from 2-3:30 p.m. via Zoom. The UBC is OSU’s advisory body to the Provost for recommendations on tuition rates, budget priorities and budget policies. The committee will discuss projections and planning relevant to developing budget and tuition recommendations for 2022-23. If you are interested in joining as an observer, register for the webinar here.

SFC Fee Deliberations: PA & SEE. The Student Fee Committee (SFC) is currently deliberating over the budget proposals received from the eight fee-funded units. Drop by MU 109 (or join through Zoom) to provide valuable feedback about Performing Arts and Student Experiences and Engagement (SEE) as the SFC discusses their budget request on Nov. 19, 3-6 p.m. This will determine how much students pay for incidental fee next year and what services they have access to.

Call for Applications: Career Champions Program. Applications for the winter 2022 Career Champions program are now being accepted. The program provides faculty and instructors with tangible ways to incorporate career connection into the classroom, while advancing diversity, equity and inclusion and examining the barriers to access for first-generation, high financial need, and/or students of color. Mid-Month Emergency Preparedness Topic: Clothing in Disaster. Essential clothing for a disaster supply is a commonly overlooked area of preparedness. If a person does not have the proper clothing suitable for the terrain they are in, then harsh elements such as rain, cold and snow can have catastrophic effects. Follow these guidelines when choosing your emergency clothing. Seeking Volunteers for a Research Study: The OSU School of Civil and Construction Engineering is seeking participants for a research study. Must be a licensed driver with at least a year of experience, at least 18 years old and provide prescriptions if wearing glasses (contacts are OK). COVID testing: Oregon State University, in collaboration with Willamette Valley Toxicology, is providing on-site COVID-19 testing. OSU employees and students, regardless of vaccination status, are welcome to obtain a test at one of these locations: Corvallis: The LaSells Stewart Center: Monday-Friday, 10 a.m.-3 p.m.; Student Experience Center: Monday-Friday 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Testing will cease on Thanksgiving Day and the day after. Dec. 9-10, only the SEC location will be open. During Winter Break, only the SEC location will be open, and its hours will be limited to Tuesdays and Wednesdays only from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Only WVT will provide testing over the break for travel purposes. Student Health Services will not be providing testing for travel purposes. Traffic and Maintenance

Leaf pickup: Starting Nov. 22, more than 20 parking lots and the OSU parking garage will be closed for sweeping and leaf pickup. Parking lots will reopen as the work is completed, and all lots are expected to be reopened by the end of the business day on Nov. 24. Furman Hall: As part of the Community Hall Slope Project, excavation and storm pipe installation work is scheduled along the south side of Furman Hall starting Thursday, Nov. 18 through Nov. 24. A sidewalk closure will be in place. Pedestrians will be able to access Furman Hall via the east entrance (view map).
