Today in the News Media

Today in the News Media is a synopsis of some of the most prominent coverage of OSU people and programs. Inclusion of any item constitutes neither an endorsement nor a critique, but rather is intended only to make the OSU community aware of significant items in the media. Content appearing includes timely news and feature stories from broadcast, print and online sources. Occasionally, opinion pieces and first-person columns appearing in mainstream media outlets that are written by faculty members and pertain to their academic or professional expertise may be included based on their unique, informative value, timeliness and space constraints. It is not the policy of OSU Today to include Letters to the Editor.

The loss that's killing the West's wildlife (The Atlantic)

“We celebrate the birth of young forests, like the birth of any child, but we’re also worried about the old,” Meg Krawchuk, a pyrogeographer at Oregon State University, told me. “We lost so many of them in the past, and fire is nibbling away at them now.”

What's changed in Oregon since the Timber Wars? (Oregon Field Guide)

Fire on the mountain: The fight for West Coast cannabis growers (Forbes)

Oregon college students navigate living on campus during pandemic (Think Out Loud)

As the 2020 school year starts, many college freshmen in Oregon are living on campus despite most classes being taught online. In recent weeks, there have been increases in COVID-19 cases in Lane County, which is home to the University of Oregon. Oregon State University and other universities in Oregon have also reported an increase in cases on campus as students move back. We’re joined by a University of Oregon freshman and an Oregon State University freshman. They tell us what it’s like to live on campus right now.

Looking at the West Coast wildfires through an Indigenous lens (The Progressive)

Dr. Daniel Leavell, an associate professor at Oregon State University and fire specialist, works with the institution’s Forestry and Natural Resources Extension Fire Program. He says that the surge of intense wildfires in recent years is due to a combination of climate change and management practices. Lack of sufficient prescribed burning—controlled burns conducted under safe conditions—has allowed fuel to accumulate in the forests, he says.

Go home and can (Daily Astorian)

Amanda Gladics (pictured), a fisheries specialist with the Oregon Sea Grant and the Oregon State University Extension Service, and Kelly Streit, a registered dietician with the extension service, star in a step-by-step video explaining how to home can tuna. Amanda lives and works in Astoria, and is active in the local fishing community.

Today’s view: Tracy Crews, Oregon Sea Grant Marine Education Manager, normally works at Hatfield Marine Science Center in Newport, but has been mainly working from her home in Yachats. “I have a large picture window next to my standup desk that looks out on our deck with bird feeders which attract a lot of furry critters as well. Last week the forest fires and resulting smoke storm changed all of that. The last few days the birds and other wildlife have started to return, looking for food and water.” We've seen lots of your workspaces. Correction regarding pay: Below is specific information regarding pay for those classified employees who were required to work onsite during the time period when some of the University buildings were closed. Eligible hourly classified employees should see essential pay for Sept. 9 to Sept. 15 reflected on their September paychecks. Any essential time worked on Sept. 16 will be paid with the October paycheck (for pay period of Sept. 16 to Oct. 15). Eligible salaried employees will receive essential pay in the October paycheck due to the nature of salaried pay, where additional pay (overtime, etc.) and/or leave used is reflected the following month due to the lag in timesheet submissions. For those classified employees who utilized “closure leave,” this time is included in regular earnings and thus does not show as a separate line item for hourly and salaried employees. For questions, please contact [email protected] or Payroll.
