As we recognize World Mental Health Day on Wednesday, former Oregon State volleyball player Lanesha Reagan reflects on the past year and the surge of change she sees in the way we now address a problem that many have suffered with in silence over the years.
Patients are now being more precisely diagnosed and treated, thanks to an Oregon State University researcher’s work in translational data science.
“Essentially, it’s traveling through more of the atmosphere,” said Adrian Gombart, a vitamin D expert at Oregon State University. The atmosphere filters out the UV rays you need to make vitamin D. “There’s not enough UVB rays making it through the atmosphere basically to synthesize vitamin D in the skin."
Student smokers who appeared to be more dependent on nicotine were more likely to violate Oregon State University’s ban on smoking after the policy was adopted, new research has found. (see also KCBY)
The Oregon Fiber Partnership, a collaborative effort of Oregon State University, the state’s major public research universities and state government, has taken a key step to develop a statewide, high-speed optical network.
Contractors have wrapped up their use of a massive set of augers to both drill down and inject concrete to form a deep underground system of pylons that will stabilize the 72,000-square foot Marine Studies building.
Oregon State University’s James Watson, an assistant professor who specializes in marine resource management, published a study last week in which he and others outlined the need for aquaculture producers in developing countries to use financial risk management tools to protect their investment.
OSU paid to move the center to its new quarters. The university also remodeled the building to help it fit the center’s programs. Counting parking permits and parking credits, the university spent more than $200,000 to relocate the center, which will continue to be charged $1 per month in rent.

Waste assessment: Two dozen students from an Oregon State University sustainability assessment class will sort through garbage from across campus on Oct. 12 as part of the second annual waste audit. NEW! State of the Coast conference: Registration has opened for Oregon Sea Grant's annual State of the Coast conference, which will be held Oct. 27 in Coos Bay. The public is invited to attend. Mental Health First Aid: An eight-hour course that teaches you how to help someone who is developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis. Prospective student open house: Fall preview, an open house program for prospective students, will be in LaSells Stewart Center and the Memorial Union on Friday, Oct. 12. WIC kickoff: The Writing Intensive Curriculum (WIC) Program is holding its Fall Kick-Off Lunch on Friday, Oct. 12, from noon-1 p.m. in Milam 215. WIC will provide pizza and soda. Thesis Defense – Water Resources Graduate Program: Aaron Rachels, Friday Oct. 12, at 1 p.m., in The Valley Library 1420. The title of his thesis is “Quantifying impacts of timber harvesting operations on suspended sediment inputs to Oregon Coast Range.” Rachels is advised by Kevin Bladon of CoF.
The College of Public Health and Human Sciences’ weekly research seminar will be held Friday, Oct. 12, 1-2 p.m., in HFC 115. Karen Davison, the Fulbright Canada research chair, faculty in the health science program at the Kwantlen Polytechnic University, will present “Feeding Minds: Nutrition, Food Security and the Promotion of Mental Health.”

NEW! Trick or Treat Thru Gill: The annual Trick or Treat with the Beaver student-athletes is back and scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 31 at Gill Coliseum from 7-8 p.m. Each of OSU’s intercollegiate sports teams participates in the event and all children are encouraged to come dressed in their favorite costumes. The event is free.
OSU Athletics Hall of Fame: Join iconic members of the 2006 and ’07 College World Series championship baseball teams and the 1970 and ’71 volleyball teams that changed the culture of women’s athletics at OSU at the official induction ceremony Friday, Oct. 19, at the Toyota Club in Reser Stadium. The ceremony also includes the induction of longtime OSU administrator Sylvia Moore, standout women’s basketball player Felicia Ragland, and one of the first African American athletes at OSU, Earnel Durden. Upcoming Fiscal Policy Changes: Several years ago, the Division of Finance and Administration initiated an extensive review of the university’s processes related to fiscal policies, dedicating a "Lean Process Team" to evaluate current practices. The team identified potential risks, best practices, opportunities for improvement and ultimately recommended a new fiscal policy program. This program has been under development for the past year and will be implemented campus-wide in the very near future. Applications for PCOSW scholarships and event co-sponsorships for Winter term projects are now being accepted: The President’s Commission on the Status of Women provides funding to faculty, students, and staff who are pursuing professional development, research, outreach, or creative projects related to women’s issues. Scholarships average $500 and are paid by reimbursement. Applications are due Friday, Oct. 26, with notification in Week 7. Readers needed: A staged reading of Lynda Radley’s “The Interference,” will take place at Oregon State on Oct. 25. Readers are being sought for the performance. Records retention: Oregon State University will accept written comments on a proposed university standard: 04-010 Records Retention. Comments will be accepted through the end of business on Oct. 25. The purpose of the comment period is to receive public feedback on this proposed standard, which is a scheduled update of the current policy. The proposed amendments are minor, based on ongoing legal review in this area, and in line with those being adopted by other Oregon public universities.
