The deepest part of the ocean is practically an alien planet (Popular Mechanics)

It may be cold and quiet, but the deepest part of the ocean, we’re learning, is a noisy place. In 2015, a team made up of researchers from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the U.S. Coast Guard, and Oregon State University, dropped a hydrophone (a waterproof microphone) into the Challenger Deep. Within 23 days, the data capacity of the device was full.

2022's most and least politically engaged states (Wallethub)

Contemporary art comes to Corvallis: The message IS the art (Gazette-Times)

In the art world, there are two types of people: those who create and those who admire, said Helen Wilhelm, director and founder of The Little Gallery at Oregon State University. She considers herself the latter.

WHO continues efforts to estimate scale of foodborne infections (Food Safety Network)

The FAO and WHO have decided to hold a meeting to develop a farm-to-table risk assessment for Listeria monocytogenes in foods. The meeting will inform a possible future revision of Codex guidelines related to controlling the pathogen in food. Matthew Stasiewicz from the University of Illinois, Jovana Kovacevic, at Oregon State University, Taran Skjerdal, of the Norwegian Veterinary Institute, and Laurent Guillier, from the French Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health Safety (ANSES) are among the experts.

Timely Teaching Tips: Are your students preparing for their first exam? Remind them of the difference between memorizing and practicing active recall. Practicing recall helps students become comfortable using content knowledge under test-like conditions and develops metacognitive skills and memory cues they can use in exams. The Academic Success Center’s Active Studying worksheet gives students several options for getting started.
