Oregon State University (Newport, OR) will conduct visual surveys and acoustic monitoring of marine mammals and seabirds to develop predictive density maps of species present in potential wind energy development areas on the West Coast. (Award amount: $2 million)
Two of the pharmacists administering boosters on Wednesday were students of Mirabella resident John Block, a retired professor from Oregon State University's College of Pharmacy. "It felt good (to see them) and they didn't say ‘Oh no that biochemistry professor is here,'" Block said with a laugh.
Dry farming was more prevalent before farmers turned to irrigation, said Amy Garrett, president of the Dry Farming Institute and Oregon State University Extension small farms programs instructor. She’s met longtime dry farmers raising crops that researchers weren’t aware could be grown without irrigation.
It doesn't take long to glean the diversity of crops at Oregon State University's North Willamette Research and Extension Center. The 160-acre farm about 20 miles south of Portland is a microcosm of the high-value agriculture found throughout the Willamette Valley — everything from berries, hazelnuts and fresh vegetables to Christmas trees and ornamental plants grown in nurseries.
But the mass detection of smoke on hops grown in both Oregon and Washington last year created urgency for the hop industry, said Thomas Shellhammer, fermentation science professor at Oregon State University and an expert on hops chemistry.
Sunflower of the sea: LeAnn Joy Adam, director, National and Global Scholarships Advising, says, “I took this photo of a sunflower sea star on a recent scuba dive in Hood Canal. Sunflowers, one of the world’s largest sea stars, have declined rapidly because of sea star wasting disease. They’ve lost more than 90% of their Pacific Ocean population since 2013. Additional threats include warming oceans and ocean acidification. Whenever I see one during a dive, I consider it a sign of hope because sunflower sea stars play a critical role in our marine ecosystem. They are natural predators of sea urchins which are notorious for destroying kelp forests.”

The Sandwich Generation: Balancing Your Personal Life With the Needs of Your Older Parents or Loved Ones: Most of us reach a point in life when parents or elderly relatives begin to require more attention and time, and sometimes, our financial support as well. Caring for an older person can be complicated and few of us are trained for the many aspects of that care. Providing care for an elder is a very personal matter. No two situations are the same and there are no simple solutions. You can, though, benefit from following some practical suggestions. Balancing work, family and caregiving responsibilities can present some challenges. Music à la Carte: Takohachi X Duo. Takohachi X (aka TakoX/ TakoTen) is a duo project of the Portland-based nonprofit organization, TAKOHACHI (takohachi.org). The performers, Yumi and Kohei, are multi-instrumentalists who perform a wide repertoire using taiko drums, shinobue (side-blown bamboo flute), shakuhachi (end-blown bamboo flute) and tsugaru shamisen (Japanese lute). Yuji Hiratsuka: An OSU Retrospective. This art exhibition of work by OSU professor of printmaking Yuji Hiratsuka celebrates Hiratsuka’s 30-year career at OSU. Since 1992 he has been a professor of printmaking and drawing at Oregon State, and he plans to retire from OSU in 2022. Now through Dec. 10 in the Memorial Union Concourse Gallery. Free, open to all. OSU Bands Homecoming Concert: A Tribute to James Douglass. Join the OSU Wind Ensemble and the Spirit and Sound of OSU Marching Band as we pay a memorial tribute to our friend, colleague and mentor James Douglass, who passed away in March of 2020. Douglass served as OSU Director of Bands from 1968-1999. FYI Friday – Supporting Transfer Student Success: Five Key Practices. Transfer student success is essential for equitable outcomes in courses, programs and institutions. More than ever, we must be ready to support students who are navigating the often complex and challenging transfer transition. "Supporting Transfer Student Success: Five Key Practices" is designed to not ask faculty and staff to add another “obligation” to an already full workload. Rather, the hope is to examine current methods with an eye toward identifying some possible new approaches, amplifying effective strategies and abandoning attitudes and behaviors that result in student disengagement. Through this session you will be asked to reflect on your own awareness and knowledge of transfer students, learn who our OSU transfer students are and collaborate to improve the ways in which our transfer students feel that OSU cares deeply about their success. Anthropology Lecture Series — Anne Pasek, Low-Carbon Research: Equity and Energy Transitions for the Academy. Pasek, an interdisciplinary researcher, assistant professor and Canada Research Chair in the department of cultural studies in the School of the Environment at Trent University in Canada, works at the intersection of climate communication, the environmental humanities and science and technology studies. Her research looks at how carbon becomes communicable in different communities and media forms, to different political and material effects. UPDATE! Center for Teaching & Learning Sparkshop: Engaging Students through effective questioning: Strategies and tips. Questioning is central to teaching. University teachers pose many questions during a class to check students’ understanding and promote critical thinking. FMLA and OFLA were enacted to assist employees and employers in balancing the demands of the workplace with the needs of employees and their families when leave is needed for a serious health condition, pregnancy, parental, bereavement and military family leave (exigency and caregiver leaves). This session is designed to help supervisors gain a basic understanding of the protected leave process.
