Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine produced least protection versus other brands, Oregon data show (Oregonian)

“The Oregon data suggests that among the three vaccines, Johnson seems to have lower protection,” Oregon State University College of Public Health and Human Sciences Professor Chunhuei Chi said. “Particularly protection against breakthrough infections or protection against hospitalization.”
 

Julie Green, artist who painted prisoners' last meals, dies aged 60 (CNN)

The painter Julie Green died last Tuesday, October 12, aged 60, after a battle with ovarian cancer, the artist's gallery, Upfor, confirmed. A professor of art at Oregon State University, Green created a poignant legacy that highlights the strange and soulful ritual for condemned prisoners on death row through "The Last Supper," a series of blue-on-white ceramic kiln-fired dishware with painted images of inmates' final dinner requests.

Jaguars are typically solitary, except for mothers with cubs, and they eat mainly deer and other mammals. Yet Oregon State University researchers and a team of international scientists appear to have found the opposite behavior in a group of jaguars (Panthera onca) in the wetlands of Brazil’s Northern Pantanal, northwest of São Paulo. The Pantanal, which extends into Paraguay and Bolivia, is the largest tropical wetland in the world.

Information Security Symposium: The Office of Information Security and ASOSU Office of Advocacy are collaborating for a Zoom symposium on Oct. 25 from 4-5 p.m. In celebration of Cybersecurity Awareness Month, this will give students and faculty a look into the private and public sector of cybersecurity, as well as tools on how to protect themselves from scams and phishing. 

NEW! Decolonizing Western Pasts: How Public History and Writing Can Inform Each Other. Environmental historian Daniel Grant writes and teaches about multiracial migrations in the North American West. Grant will discuss combining archival research with public history, and will share lessons from his work with Indigenous, African American and Anglo communities in Yuma, Arizona. Free. Housing fire safety: Students who live away from home should recognize fire safety features present in their living space. Here are some tips to stay safe: Look for a fully sprinklered building when choosing a place to live. Make sure your sleeping area is protected with a smoke alarm inside the room. Test the smoke detector(s) monthly. Learn your building’s evacuation plan and practice the drill for muscle memory. Stay in the kitchen when cooking and only cook when you're alert.
