World's oldest ice core could solve mystery of 'flipped' ice age cycles (Science)

Impact Studio Sessions: Join Rich Duncombe, Impact Studio director, today, Oct. 31 from noon to 1 p.m., in MU 215 Thought Lab for a conversation about the 2019 Impact Studio initiatives. Duncombe will open with a summary of the initiatives and an overview of the Impact Studio development process. This is an informal brown bag lunch studio session of a series being offered every three months to discuss the active initiatives in our portfolio and broader topics relating to how to lead adjacent innovation inside of Oregon State and other successful institutions.

Farm, Fork & Glass: Roots & Growth in U.K. Sustainable Agriculture: Join Dawn Moyer, lead academic advisor, and Jonathan Velez, professor and department head in the College of Agricultural Sciences, for a two-week faculty-led study abroad program in the UK from June 28 through July 11, 2020. This program focuses on the traditional and contemporary practices of growing, distributing and consuming agricultural products in the UK and simultaneously explores the cities, farms and industries surrounding Nottingham, Cheltenham, Oxford and Edinburgh. NEW! Baccalaureate Core Listening Sessions: The Faculty Senate Executive Committee and the Office of Undergraduate Education are holding a series of listening sessions for Bacc Core stakeholders: faculty, students, unit supervisors, advisers and other personnel involved with developing, administering and teaching Baccalaureate Core courses. Representatives from the EC, Vice Provost Alix Gitelman’s office and the Faculty Senate Baccalaureate Core Committee will attend each meeting to hear your ideas. From this feedback, as well as research on other current models of general education in higher education, we expect to develop two or three alternative models to bring back to listening sessions before the end of the 2019-2020 academic year. Vistas and Vineyards 30th Anniversary Show Opening Reception: Vistas and Vineyards is celebrating 30 years of painting outdoors, and they are sharing their work with the community. Over 45 of their current member artists and several founding members will display 120 works of art painted in plein aire. Opening reception is Friday, Nov. 1, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. in the Giustina Gallery at The LaSells Stewart Center. This is free and open to the public. Faculty Conversations with President Ray: In an ongoing effort to improve communication lines between the faculty and administration, the Faculty Senate Executive Committee is sponsoring Fall term small group conversations with President Ray and faculty (academic, research and professional). Each conversation will be facilitated by a Faculty Senate Executive Committee member and will consist of up to 12 faculty. This is an opportunity for the President to hear what faculty are thinking and experiencing; faculty are encouraged to speak freely. NEW! Real-time Grid Operations: Bob Frost of Portland General Electric’s Grid Engineering & Compliance will provide an overview of real-time grid operations within the interconnections of the United States. Ecology, Evolution, and Conservation Biology Seminar Series: Kelly Biedenweg, assistant professor in the Department of Fisheries and Wildlife at Oregon State University, will give her talk “The Social Conservationist: Trust, Identity, and Bias in Biological Conservation” on Friday, Nov. 1, from 3 to 4 p.m. in LINC 302.

Journey Into Leadership: The Center for Learning & Organizational Development, Office of Human Resources, is accepting applications from academic faculty, professional faculty and classified employees for the Journey Into Leadership program through Friday, Nov. 1. JIL is a seven-series leadership exploration and development program. It promotes the belief that you can effectively lead from whatever position you hold. Goat Discovery Day at Pleasant Hill High School: This is an educational event for both the experienced and beginner goat farmer. Classes, displays and hands-on learning. Saturday Nov. 2, 9 a.m.-4 p.m., at Pleasant Hill High School, 36386 OR-58 in Pleasant Hill. Session topics include goat health and disease management, milking, FAMACHA training, packing with goats, hay and forage nutrition, milking and milking machines, goat conformation and more. Seeking Volunteers for Cat Behavior Research: The Human-Animal Interaction lab is looking for participants in a study researching attachment between pairs of cats who share the same household. The test consists of two separate 15-minute visits to our lab in Withycombe Hall on the OSU campus. Cats of any age/breed/etc are eligible to participate as long as they are in good health. Yogurt Consumers: Participants wanted for a research study examining factors that drive consumer purchases of yogurt. Potential subjects must be a yogurt consumer, between 18-65 years old, and fluent in English. The study may run through December and may take up to 45 minutes.
