OSU, coalition get ocean observatories grant (KTVZ)

The coalition, led by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, with direction from the NSF and guidance from the OOI Facilities Board, will include the University of Washington, Oregon State University, and Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. (see also Gazette-Times)
 

Diverse fund-raisers for tomorrow's donors (Inside Higher Ed)

Last month, he started his residency at Oregon State University as a social media specialist and fund-raiser. He's currently helping plan the university's first Day of Giving campaign scheduled for next April and is seeking out current students and alumni among various affinity groups, including African Americans, people who identify as LGBTQIA and members of Greek organizations, to get involved.
 

Hazelnut industry aims to inspire culinary uses (Capital Press)

The Sept. 13 tour was organized by the Oregon Hazelnut Marketing Board and included stops at a hazelnut orchard and a processing plant, followed by a hazelnut cooking session at Oregon State University’s Food Innovation Center in Portland.
 

Hurricanes: Before and after are different worlds (Herald & News)

This perspective on hurricanes and community was written by Nicole Sanchez, assistant professor of horticulture at OSU’s Klamath Basin Research and Extension Center. Sanchez, who grew up in Virginia, and as an adult lived in North Carolina, has been working with the extension service in Klamath Falls since 2016.

Blue Mountain Community College has greatly expanded its programs for those interesting in the field, including a precision agriculture partnership with Oregon State University Extension Service. The future of agriculture will bear some similarities to the past, but technology’s impact can’t be understated.

Beaver Community Fair: Registration open. Annually the "Beaver Community Fair" draws together the OSU and greater Corvallis communities to celebrate the start of the academic year. This year’s fair will take place on Thursday, Sept. 20, from noon to 4 p.m, in the Memorial Union Quad/SEC Plaza.

Fall Into Service: On Saturday, Sept. 22, the SLI Center for Civic Engagement (CCE) is holding its annual Fall Into Service event, which is the first day of service of the year. The CCE is offering six service projects, and OSU students, staff, faculty, and their children/dependents are invited to celebrate and support our community with us by participating in these projects. Volunteer opportunity: Volunteers are requested for canvassing Corvallis neighborhoods in pairs to welcome students to the community. The canvassing takes place from 1 to 3 p.m. on Sept. 23. Volunteers will check in at Grace Lutheran Church (at the northwest corner of Kings and Harrison) and receive canvassing assignments, script and materials to distribute to residents in a nearby neighborhood, [click here]. OSU150 Land Grant Festival, Oct. 1–17:  This is the fourth of four anniversary festivals that recognize Oregon State as one of only two universities in the U.S. with land, sea, space and sun grant designations. The mission continues - learning, discovery and service to all people will always drive us to make our world better. The festival features tours of unique teaching and research environments including the McDonald Research Forest, Lois Bates Acheson Veterinary Teaching Hospital, O.H. Hinsdale Wave Lab and the Ocean Observing Center. Other activities include open houses and presentations. Free registration required for many events - reserve a spot today.

Documentary screening & talk with Wade Rathke: “The Organizer” follows Wade Rathke, the controversial founder of ACORN, and explores the much maligned and misunderstood occupation of community organizing. Rathke founded the organization in 1970, and shepherded its growth into a national political powerhouse. Internal conflict and external pressures would lead to its downfall, but undeterred, Rathke continues to build new organizations around the world.Wednesday, Oct. 3, 3 p.m., MU Journey Room 104.

Marine Science Career Day: Know a high school student interested in marine science? Hatfield Marine Science Center is hosting a career day on Thursday, Oct. 4. Faculty Success Symposium: Academic Technology invites faculty, GTAs, and support staff to our annual Faculty Success Symposium. Includes Canvas workshops, and sessions on FERPA, Top Hat, managing academic misconduct, and more. Friday, Sept. 21, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m .in Cascade Hall (Corvallis campus). Managers Legal Toolkit:  If you are supervising professional faculty, you don’t want to miss Managers Legal Toolkit, a training workshop held Oct. 17. This program prepares you to handle issues faced daily in the management of professional faculty. NEW! Game day parking: Saturday, Sept. 22 at 1 p.m., the Beavers will host the University of Arizona. Athletics game day parking will be in effect, and athletic issued permits are required for lots marked with X on the linked PDF (https://oregonstate.box.com/s/tny0mw4pvxi58vvw862ztvf5dmfq6dnd). Those without proper permits will be towed at the owner’s expense. Any student or staff wishing to access campus for work-related purposes on Saturday may park in the orange colored lots without charge. All lot attendants are aware of this policy. New Pedal Corvallis bike share stations: OSU in partnership with Oregon Cascades West Council of Governments is bringing two new Pedal Corvallis bikeshare stations to campus this week and adding nine additional bikes to the program. One station is adjacent to the Crop Science Building, on 30th Street at Campus Way, and one is adjacent to Gill Coliseum, on Ralph Miller Lane at 26th Street. The stations are funded by sponsorships from ASOSU and OSU Transportation Services. The bikes are available to anyone age 18 or older. An updated map can be found HERE. An annual pass is $25 and a one-month pass is $10. Pass holders can use their phone to unlock the bikes for rides of 2 hours or less for free. Additionally, a new Pay As You Go pass is $1 per half hour.  

Valley Library expands weekend hours: Students requested it, the library responded, and now there are longer weekend hours. Here’s when the library is open during academic terms. Sunday: open 10 a.m. and open 24 hours until Friday at 10 p.m. Saturday: 10 a.m.–10 p.m. More info about library hours is at https://library.oregonstate.edu/valley-library-hours.

Sea Grant Symposium: Registration and abstracts for Oregon Sea Grant’s 4th Biennial Scholars Day Symposium are due Oct. 1 at 11:30 p.m. At this event, students currently supported by Oregon Sea Grant’s marine and coastal science programs will present talks and posters linking research, education, extension, fellowship, and communications. Questions? OSU multivitamin research study (Corvallis): What is the role of multivitamins in improving the micronutrient status of older men? Principal investigator Tory Hagen of the Linus Pauling Institute is looking for healthy, non-smoking men, 70-plus years old to take tablets daily for six months, all provided by the study. University Standard updates: Oregon State University will accept written comments on two proposed university standards: 03-010 Procurement Thresholds and Methods and 03-015 Procurement Solicitations and Contracts. Comments will be accepted through the end of business on Oct. 9.  The purpose of the comment period is to receive public feedback on these proposed standards, which will modernize, update, and replace three existing standards (580-061, 580-062, and 580-063). Robotics symposium: Registration is now open for the OSU150 Futures Focus Symposium:  The Promise and the Peril of Artificial Intelligence and Robotics. This event features sessions all day, a free lunch, keynote by Jacob Ward and a free reception, and you may select the sessions that you can attend. Registration is free, but required for this culminating event of OSU’s 150th anniversary celebration. 

Toy Drive: As a past sponsor of our annual Joy Drive, AABC- HR is having a Toy drive for the new Kids Closet program sponsored through OSU Family Resources. Many of our students celebrate different holidays throughout the year that do not always fall during the month of December. Many of these holidays also include the tradition of gift giving that can create a financial stress for our students with children. In creating a student support program that reaches the greatest number of students with children, we have decided to open a year round gift closet so that families may “shop” for any holiday, or even their child’s birthday. Our Joy Drive is now our Kids Gift Closet; spreading the joy throughout the year.  Drop donations in the drop box at the front desk by From Now until Sept. 20 at AABC- HR (University Plaza 1600 SW Blvd Suite 150). Mid-Monthly Emergency Preparedness Topic – Pets in Disasters: The likelihood that you and your animals will survive an emergency such as a fire or flood, tornado or earthquake is directly related to your level of emergency planning. Whether you decide to stay in place in an emergency or evacuate to a safer location, you will need to make plans in advance for your pets. Limited submission proposal: A limited submission proposal is a type of broad agency announcement, request for proposal, or other funding opportunity, in which the sponsor restricts the number of applications or proposals that can be submitted by an institution or a unit within an institution. Apply now for the Ecampus Research Fellows Program: If you are interested in conducting research about online teaching and learning, the Ecampus Research Unit will help you plan your proposal for the Ecampus Research Fellows Program. The Ecampus Research Unit annually funds up to five faculty and/or department projects - $20,000 each - to support research in the areas of distance and online education, including hybrid delivery. Term-Long Laptops at the Valley Library: The Valley Library has 24 Dell laptops available for long-term borrowing. These laptops are term-long substitutes for students without computers. OSU Standard Updated: Oregon State University will take written comments on its proposed update to OSU Standard 576-060 Alcoholic Beverages, through the end of business on Sept. 21. The purpose of the comment period is to receive public feedback regarding updating and replacing the existing standard on alcoholic beverages on campus with University Standard 07-005 Alcoholic Beverages.
