Bing Newcomb, whose E*Trade transformed stock trading, dies at 79 (New York Times)  

Mr. Newcomb, who co-founded the company E*Trade and wrote the computer code that made it work, died on Jan. 29 at his home in Palo Alto, Calif. He was 79. His death was reported locally earlier but announced only last month by the family through Oregon State University, his alma mater and a major beneficiary of his philanthropy. His wife, Gerry Newcomb, said the cause was congestive heart failure after neurological complications. (see also For Oregon State)

Will Oregon's high snowpack levels affect wildfire season? (KOIN)

While this seems promising in a state that has been experiencing drought for the last several years, Erica Fleishman, director of the Oregon Climate Change Research Institute and a professor at Oregon State University, said precipitation levels across the state have been below normal and that’s concerning. 
 

Results in 8 minutes: New handheld sensor tests sweat for disease-related hormone (SciTechDaily)

A team of researchers at the College of Engineering at Oregon State University has created a handheld sensor that can measure cortisol levels in sweat and provide results within eight minutes. This is a significant development in monitoring the hormone, whose levels serve as a marker for numerous illnesses, including various forms of cancer.

One that experts often single out is iron. The concern here is not side effects, but reduced effectiveness. “Iron is a difficult mineral to absorb, and there are a variety of food components that can interfere with its absorption,” says Dr. Alexander Michels, Ph.D., Research Coordinator and Communications Officer at Linus Pauling Institute at Oregon State University. “Some people might find that they just aren’t increasing their iron levels, and that is very important for people with iron-dependent anemia.

Board of Trustees: The Oregon State University Board of Trustees will meet April 13-14 to consider tuition rates for the next academic year, the construction of a proposed student success center at OSU-Cascades, the university’s 10-year business forecast and stipends for certain members of public boards. OSU Data Day: OSU will host its inaugural Data Day 9 a.m.-4 p.m., April 18 at the Alumni Center. Benton County Extension 4-H plant sale: A 4-H plant sale featuring flowers for pollinators, tomatoes, peppers, basil, herbs, honey and more will take place from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. April 29 at  the Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church, 2650 NW Highland Dr., Corvallis. Yarn donations requested: The OSU Craft Center has a weekly crochet club for OSU students. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to find community, learn and engage in a stress-releasing craft. This club is free; the craft center provides a gifted student crochet lead to teach and provide help as well as crochet hooks. Yarn donations are currently being sought from the community. Raising Awareness for Child Abuse and Sexual Assault Prevention: During the month of April, Cedar and the rest of the Department of Public Safety team will be wearing blue and teal DPS pins to raise awareness for child abuse and sexual assault prevention. The blue pins support Prevent Child Abuse Oregon in their effort to strengthen families and proactively protect children from abuse. The teal pins support the National Sexual Violence Resource Center in their work to end all forms of oppression, build racial equity and prevent all forms of sexual abuse, harassment and assault. Award nominations sought: The President’s Commission on the Status of Women is currently accepting nominations for the University Mentoring and Professional Development award. This award recognizes any classified, professional faculty or faculty member who excels in mentoring, supporting and encouraging OSU employees, especially women and those from under-represented groups or non-traditional careers, and making available to them opportunities for professional, educational and personal development. Faculty Innovator award: This is the last week to submit nominations for the 2023 Faculty Innovator Award. This award honors an outstanding Oregon State University inventor who has made a contribution leading to commercialization that significantly impacts their field and society.
