But his candidacy was hardly for nothing. Kristof generated great material for his next book, and the Times welcomed him back last August. Now, Kristof will take to the stage for Oregon State University’s annual Tom McCall lecture. (Kristof and the nonaffiliated candidate Betsy Johnson both regularly invoked the former GOP governor as a role model in their campaigns.)
 

Model invented for large-scale screenings of cervical cancer drugs (Economic Times)

Scientists have developed a model, using a three-dimensional cellular platform, for simultaneous and rapid testing of multiple drug compounds, enabling large-scale screenings to uncover new and personalised therapy against cervical cancer. The study, led by Oregon State University (OSU) College of Engineering, US, described the method to depart from the historic means of testing drugs which used a single layer of cells. The grand total for the drive was 458,812.5 meals (more than two times the number of meals from all the other public Oregon universities combined), including $96,919 in payroll contributions, 4,326.22 pounds of food, and $54,936.95 from fundraising and other donations. Town hall: Developing OSU’s next strategic plan. Beginning in January, OSU’s new strategic plan will succeed OSU’s 2019-2023 – Strategic Plan 4.0: Transformation, Excellence, and Impact. In Memoriam: The annual OSU In Memoriam will be held 5:30 p.m., April 27 to honor students, faculty, staff and alumni who have died during the 2022 calendar year. The event will take place in the MU Lounge and livestream broadcast via live.oregonstate.edu and will feature poetry, music and activities for reflection and healing along with guest speakers and representatives from each community to honor the deceased. Joint Service Review: The Army, Navy/Marine and Air Force Reserve Officer Training Programs (ROTC) at Oregon State University will hold their annual Joint Service Review at 10 a.m., May 5 in the Memorial Union Quad. This event is a long­standing tradition that allows cadets and midshipmen to participate in a formal review before commissioning as officers in the various military services. Science Pub: The surprising role that invisible single-celled microbes play in buffering climate change impacts in ocean waters will be the topic of Oregon State University's Science Pub event at 6 p.m. April 5. The free event, which can be attended in person at the Old World Deli in Corvallis or viewed online, will feature a presentation by Kimberly Halsey, the Excellence in Microbiology Faculty Scholar in the OSU College of Science. NEW! Eye tracking study participants wanted: The OSU School of Civil and Construction Engineering seeks research study participants who are at least 18 years old and have a valid driver’s license. The study purpose is to better understand driving habits while viewing videos and wearing eye tracking glasses. Participants will be paid for their involvement, which requires a time commitment of approximately 45 minutes and coming to the OSU Driving Simulator Laboratory. Indigenous undergrad summer internship supplemental funding application deadline April 10: The New Beginnings for Tribal Students (NBTS) program offers OSU undergrads self-identifying as Native American, Alaskan Native and Native Hawaiian, supplemental funding ($3750) for summer internships in natural sciences. Internships must be at least eight weeks long and interns will meet with NBTS mentors over the summer. More info and application at https://opencampus.oregonstate.edu/nbts.

Art+Science Student Fellowships: This one-year fellowship offers OSU students the opportunity to explore the intersection of two disciplines. Fellows will develop a creative, journalistic or scholarly project informed by engagement with science and art, music, theater, multi-media or creative writing. Research equipment reserve funds: In partnership with the Research Council, the Research Office is now accepting Research Equipment Reserve Funds (RERF) applications to strengthen the research infrastructure. RERF may be used to acquire, repair, renovate, or improve capital equipment directly used for research. The application deadline is April 10.
