Today in the News Media is a synopsis of some of the most prominent coverage of OSU people and programs. Inclusion of any item constitutes neither an endorsement nor a critique, but rather is intended only to make the OSU community aware of significant items in the media. Content appearing includes timely news and feature stories from broadcast, print and online sources. Occasionally, opinion pieces and first-person columns appearing in mainstream media outlets that are written by faculty members and pertain to their academic or professional expertise may be included based on their unique, informative value, timeliness and space constraints. Did humans truly domesticate dogs? Canine history is more of a mystery than you think (Popular Science)

This swirl of friend-making ecstasy has inspired a rival origin theory that focuses on feelings rather than cognition: “their hearts, not their smarts,” in the words of Clive Wynne, behavioral scientist at Arizona State University. With collaborators Nicole Dorey and Monique Udell at the University of Florida and Oregon State University, respectively, Wynne proposes that the essence of dog identity has to do with emotional connections—love, to use a word rare in science.
 

Study: 'Risky decision-making' tied to young adults' pot use (KOIN)

Young adults who have a history of frequently using marijuana showed a greater tendency to demonstrate “risky decision-making,” according to a new study out of Oregon State University.

“If the Democratic senators think they have a chance at taking back the White House, there’s less incentive to approve any of Trump’s judges, particularly if Trump is not working with them to find candidates that are amenable to them,” said Rorie Solberg, a political science professor at Oregon State University who researches and writes about judicial nominations.
 

Top producers of Fulbright U.S. scholars and students, 2019-20 (Chronicle of Higher Education)

Several colleges have seen an increase this year in their numbers of award recipients in the Fulbright U.S. Scholar and Fulbright U.S. Student Programs. The exchange programs are sponsored by the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. Eight doctoral, two master's, seven baccalaureate, and two special-focus institutions, all highlighted with boldfaced text, were top producers of both U.S. scholars and U.S. students in 2019-20.

In a surprising study, Oregon State University researchers found that no matter how much stress they placed on mice from either a high-fat diet or strenuous exercise, the animals’ mitochondria were able to adapt and continue their normal processes. (see also KTVZ)
 

Public transit of the future? (The Source Weekly)

The OSU-Cascades Mobility Lab started Ride Bend in July. It announced Jan. 21 that it will continue to run the on-call ridesharing service through March 30, thanks to a $10,000 contribution from OSU-Cascades' Associated Students of Cascades Campus.

Ecological Detection in the Arctic: Three Vignettes: Marc Mangel is a biologist who is broadly interested in using mathematical methods to solve biological and ecological problems. He currently works on projects ranging from how human disturbance of foraging habitats will affect marine mammals to using population modeling to inform cybersecurity measures. Trump and Nuclear Weapons: Ambassador Thomas Graham, former senior diplomat and director of the U.S. Arms Control and Disarmament Agency, will give a joint School of Nuclear Science and Engineering and School of Public Policy seminar on “Trump and Nuclear Weapons: The impact of U.S. action toward Iran, North Korea and Russia.” He will speak on Feb. 11 from 4- 5 p.m. in Memorial Union 206.

Gatekeeper Suicide Prevention Training: Did you know that suicide is the second-leading cause of death among college students? This makes it especially important for campus community members to equip ourselves with knowledge that enables us to recognize and help when someone is in need. CAPS invites students, faculty, and staff to attend our Gatekeeper Suicide Prevention Workshops. Policy changes: Fiscal Policy 03-140-505 Meals, Refreshments and Events has been revised to update and consolidate related policies (FIS 410-01 Alcoholic Beverages, FIS 410-05 Hosting Groups and Official Guests, FIS 410-07 Non-Travel Meals and Refreshments, FIS 410-09 Graduation Events). The new policy and related FAQs can be accessed on the FPP website. OSU Folk Club/Thrift Shop Scholarships: The OSU Folk Club/Thrift Shop Scholarship Committee is accepting applications from high school seniors who will attend OSU in the fall of 2020 and are graduating from a Benton County High School or live in Benton County. Students will need to attend OSU full-time or have full-time dual enrollment in the Degree Partnership Program at LBCC and OSU with at least 6 credits per term at OSU in the academic year 2020-2021. The principal criterion for this award is academic merit. The Scholarship Committee is also accepting applications from non-traditional women (age 30 or older, who will be attending OSU full-time or part-time in 2020-2021 pursuing their first undergraduate degree). Students must be U.S. citizens and residents of Benton County, Linn County or Monmouth or Independence in Polk County. Principal criteria are financial need and academic merit. Applications are available at high school counselors' offices, at the OSU Folk Club Thrift Shop, 144 NW Second St. in Corvallis, and online at https://osufolk.oregonstate.edu. Deadline for mailing is March 6 for high schoolers and March 20 for non-traditional students. 

Encourage students to influence campus health and wellness: The National College Health Assessment (NCHA) survey was sent this week to a random, stratified sample of approximately 8,000 OSU (Corvallis, Portland Center, and Ecampus) students. We are aiming for a response rate of 20% or better by Feb. 26 – and we need your help to make that happen!  Please encourage any students with whom you are in contact to check their emails and complete the NCHA survey if they have been selected to receive it. It only takes 20-30 minutes of their time. Those who complete the survey are entered into a giveaway for one of: two Timbuk2 backpacks, ten Hydroflasks or ten $25 Orange Rewards. The survey is confidential and completely voluntary. Request for Proposals: The OSU Advantage Accelerator is seeking proposals to facilitate the further development and commercialization of OSU applied innovations. Proposals can be submitted for projects focused on bringing OSU-owned innovations invented by OSU faculty, staff and/or graduate students in any discipline closer to market. Each project may be awarded up to $15,000 and should span six months or less, beginning in April 2020. Funding can be used to fund students, prototyping expenses, travel and more. Proposals are due no later than 5 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 28.
