They have names like Scarlett, Roller Skate and Solé. They are 3 of the hundreds of gray whales that call the Oregon coast home. Right now most of them are wintering in the warm waters of Baja, Mexico. But they’ll be back — and Oregon State University researchers will be waiting.
Oregon State University says new reseach shows "ecological communities on the Oregon coast are being subtly destabilized by the pressures of climate change despite giving an appearance of stress resistance." (see also OPB, KTVZ)
Renee Bellinger, lead-author of the study and a doctoral student at Oregon State University, explains that it's very rare to see cells that contain magnetic material. Adding that, the team wasn't able to definitively prove that magnetite was present and was the underlying key to the animal's magnetic perception. However, the study reveals associations between the genes that are a vital tool in finding new evidence of how potential magnetic sensors in animals function.

Human-robot interactions: The Human-Machine Teaming Laboratory in Oregon State University's Collaborative Robotics and Intelligent Systems Institute is conducting a research experiment to study human-robot interaction for simulated supervisor-based environments. Participants will complete a series of tasks that require controlling and monitoring a simulated remotely-piloted vehicle and will complete anonymous questionnaires. COVID-19 testing: Oregon State University, in collaboration with Willamette Valley Toxicology (WVT), is providing on-site COVID-19 testing. Reser: For work related to the Completing Reser Stadium project, southbound traffic along SW 26th Street near the entrance to the Reser Stadium Parking lot will be diverted into the northbound lane while excavation and pipe installation work is occurring in the closed lane. Flaggers will be used at three locations to separate vehicular traffic from construction workers and equipment. SW 26th Street, access to the Reser Stadium parking lot and adjacent lots will be accessible. All lanes of traffic will reopen at end of shift each day. Construction activities and lane closures will occur between 7 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. daily from Jan. 10-14. (view map).
West Greenhouse: As part of the 20 & 21 West Greenhouse project, a portion of sidewalk will be closed to pedestrian traffic between SW 30th and 35th streets on SW Campus Way for ADA access and sidewalk improvement work. The month-long closure is scheduled to start on Friday, Jan. 7 and continue through Feb. 7. Please view the online map, which provides an overview of this location and appropriate detours to take. Direct access to the 20 & 21 greenhouses can be made at their north side doors.
Graf Hall: As part of the Graf Hall Renovation Project, a section of sidewalk on the north side of Graf Hall will be closed for excavation work for a new sidewalk and building entry. During the closure, pedestrian traffic will be routed to the north side of Monroe Avenue (view map). The closure takes place now through Jan. 14.
Benton Place: For continued utility work related to the Arts and Education Complex project, an additional full closure of SW Benton Place is scheduled. The additional closure takes place Jan. 10-11 (view map). There will be minimal impacts to parking. SW Benton Place will reopen over the weekend before the additional closure starts next Monday.
