Oregon State University is inviting all Oregonians to an open house on Jan. 14 to celebrate the grand opening of the OSU Portland Center in the historic Meier & Frank Building in downtown Portland.

NEW! Board of Trustees: The OSU Board of Trustees will meet from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 18, in the Horizon Room of the Memorial Union, 2501 S.W. Jefferson Way in Corvallis. The board will consider Strategic Plan 4.0 metrics, the university’s 10-year capital forecast, an amendment to the board’s investment policy, and the issuance of OSU revenue bonds. The board will discuss risks in today’s higher education landscape, and will hear reports from the OSU Foundation and OSU Alumni Association and a report on the close of the university’s OSU150 celebration. Piano Series performance: American pianist Jeremy Denk will perform at 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 13, in The LaSells Stewart Center as part of the Corvallis-OSU Piano International Steinway Piano Series. Denk was awarded a MacArthur Foundation Fellowship in 2013. He has performed as a soloist across North America with the Chicago Symphony, New York Philharmonic, Los Angeles Philharmonic, San Francisco Symphony, Seattle Symphony and the Cleveland Orchestra. OSU Portland Center grand opening: Celebrate the opening of Oregon State's new space right off of Pioneer Square in downtown Portland on Jan. 14, 1-6:30 p.m. Explore the facility during this open house. Visit with representatives from OSU colleges and divisions to learn about their programs. The OSU Portland Center is located on the second floor of the historic Meier & Frank Building, adjacent to Portland’s Pioneer Courthouse Square. Besides serving as an educational space for a number of Oregon State’s signature programs, the center houses the Portland-based staff of the OSU Foundation and OSU Alumni Association, acting as a hub for the university’s many activities in the region.

2019 MLK Day of Service: Registration for the 2019 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service on Saturday, Jan. 19 is now open. Students, faculty, staff, and their partners and children are all invited to participate in OSU’s largest day of service of the year. Projects will take place at various times throughout the day. A light breakfast, snacks, and hot lunch will be provided. Check-in will be located in the MU Horizon Room 49, and transportation to all projects will be provided. New art exhibit: An exhibition of work by artist Ka’ila Farrell Smith, “Marks From A Journey Home,” will be on display Jan. 7 through Feb. 7 in the Fairbanks Gallery. Farrell-Smith is a contemporary Klamath Modoc visual artist based in Modoc Point, Oregon, and co-director for the Signal Fire artist residency program based in Portland. The gallery is located in Fairbanks Hall, 220 S.W. 26th St. It is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m., with hours extended until 8 p.m. on the third Thursday of each month for the Corvallis Art Walk.
Art installation: “View of the Red Forest,” a multimedia art installation on the dilapidation and rebirth of the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone, will be on display Jan. 7 through Jan. 31 in Fairbanks Hall on the Oregon State University Corvallis campus. The installation, by artist Julia Oldham, consists of large prints of windows looking out of abandoned buildings onto lush landscapes, with video documentation of Oldham’s visit to the zone. The exhibit will be held in the Woodshop Projects, a rustic, basement art space in Fairbanks Hall. Hours are 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Ecology, Evolution and Conservation Biology Seminar: The Honorable Dr. Jane Lubchenco: Former U.S. Under Secretary of Commerce for Oceans and Atmosphere Jane Lubchenco, who was head of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and is a distinguished professor at OSU, will give a talk "Balancing Conservation and Sustainable Use: Science and Policy" on Wednesday, Jan. 9, 3-4 p.m. in Withycombe 109. January Random Review: Kathleen Dean Moore, author and distinguished OSU professor of environmental philosophy emeritus, will review “The Overstory” by Richard Powers on Jan. 9 at noon in the main meeting room of the Corvallis-Benton County Public Library. Powers is the author of 12 novels and the recipient of a MacArthur Fellowship, the National Book Award, and was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize.
Environmental Public Health in the 21st Century Research Symposium: Join us on Jan. 11, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., at the MU Horizon Room for a research symposium sponsored by the OSU Department of Environmental and Molecular Toxicology to bridge the gaps between current advances in exposure science, the implementation of 21st-century toxicology vision and regulatory considerations relevant to environmental chemicals. Fourth Annual OSU STEM Leaders Program Research Symposium: The OSU STEM Leaders Program will be hosting its research symposium, where second-year students will present research posters from across campus. Science Pub: Too Much of a Good Thing? The science of super-cushioned running shoes with Christine Pollard, director of the FORCE Lab at OSU-Cascades. Jan. 14 at 6 p.m. at Old World Deli. The presentation is free, but registration is required.
What Transpires Now: Transgender Histories & Futures: In this talk drawn from her work in progress, “What Transpires Now,” Susan Stryker explores the relationship between the transgender past and present, and how history can inspire us to reimagine the future. The talk will focus on the story of Frances Thompson, whose life became the focus of a national scandal in the 1870s, in ways that prefigure the weaponization of trans people in contemporary political controversies. Stryker is associate professor of Gender and Women’s Studies at the University of Arizona. Thursday, Jan. 17, 5 p.m. LaSells Stewart Center, C&E Auditorium.
Mental Health First Aid: Mental Health First Aid is an eight-hour course that teaches you how to help someone who is developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis. The training helps you identify, understand, and respond to signs of addictions and mental illnesses. 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., MU Journey Room 104 on Friday, Feb. 1. Master Gardener training: Are you passionate about gardening? Are you interested in sharing your science-based knowledge as a volunteer community educator? Become an OSU Master Gardener volunteer and get growing from the ground up. Registration is now open for the 2019 metro-area OSU Extension Service Master Gardener training. Training is a hybrid course including in-person classes, online content, hands-on workshops and gardening seminars starting in February. MLK Celebration: Sybrina Fulton, mother of Trayvon Martin, author and advocate for social justice is the keynote speaker for the 37th annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration lecture on Mon., Jan. 21, at 11 a.m. at the LaSells Stewart Center. Beginning Dec. 6, keynote session tickets will be available to the general public. The celebration week runs from Jan. 19-25. OSU-Cascades board: The Oregon State University-Cascades Advocacy and Advisory Board will meet on Jan. 23. Oregon Sea Grant 2020-2022 Biennial Research Competition: Oregon Sea Grant invites researchers affiliated with any Oregon institution of higher education to submit pre-proposals for two-year research projects. NEW! Accreditation: Oregon State University is accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU), a regional accreditation agency recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation. As part of the ongoing accreditation process, OSU is scheduled to submit a "Year Seven Self-Evaluation Report" to the NWCCU and host a site visit of peer evaluators from April 15-17, 2019. Accreditation by the NWCCU represents the commission’s judgment that an institution is satisfactorily achieving its mission and educational purposes and that it meets or exceed the commission’s standards of quality and effectiveness. OSU has been continuously accredited by the NWCCU since 1924, having been most recently reaffirmed Spring 2011. As part of the review process, OSU invites the public to send comments regard the institution’s qualification for accreditation and/or its efforts to achieve mission fulfillment directly to the NWCCU. The Office of Student Life, in collaboration with Counseling and Psychological Services, developed a CARE folder, which is intended to provide you with valuable resources and referral information. Fiscal Policy – Rule 03-140-501 Communications Allowance replaces FIS 410-02 Cell Phone Charges & FIS 410-33 Communications Allowance. This new policy provides a communications allowance, rather than a reimbursement requiring additional documentation. OSU faculty and staff who are required to conduct university business using their own personal communication device may be eligible for one of three rates base on the level of business use, as described in this policy.
Take Part in Hybrid Learning Community: The OSU Hybrid Initiative invites faculty to submit proposals to participate in the Hybrid Faculty Learning Community from Feb.-April and redesign an established Corvallis campus course as a hybrid course. Food drive: One in six residents in Linn and Benton counties sought emergency food assistance last year. The OSU Food Drive gives Linn Benton Food Share nearly 25 percent of their food buying power, which is raised during the OSU Food Drive in the month of February. Take a look at the coordinators list to see if your unit/building/floor/department has a lead for this effort. If not, ask your supervisor if you can be a location coordinator. Traffic and Maintenance
NEW! Traffic Signal Damaged at 35th & Western: A vehicle accident in December at Western and 35th in Corvallis caused extensive damage to the traffic signal equipment that controls the intersection. Although replacement equipment has been ordered, the severity of the damage coupled with delays from the holidays means that the signal may not be functional again until mid-January. The signal is disabled and the intersection is being controlled by stop signs. Western and 35th is a busy intersection, and motorists are advised to give themselves extra time traveling through the area.
