Like thousands of other 20-somethings, Jasmine Garcia is graduating from college this weekend. The 22-year-old will get her degree in civil engineering with a minor in math from Oregon State University on Saturday.
A renewable energy project planned off the coast of Newport is taking a step forward. Oregon State University has submitted a final license application for a wave energy testing facility with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. If built, it would be the largest of its kind in the United States.
Biological control of the brown marmorated stink bug, an invasive pest that devastates gardens and crops, would be more effective in natural areas bordering crops or at times when certain insecticides aren’t being applied, according to a new Oregon State University study. (see also Phys.Org)
For the past two decades, seafaring scientists from Oregon State University have set out from the Newport, Oregon, harbor to collect data. Tracing ocean trenches and undersea mountains, their heavy equipment dips into the water taking measurements of the current, the ocean temperature and zooplankton levels.
The genesis of the story was a passing conversation in a peace studies class, but once he began looking into the background of some of OSU’s building namesakes, Trinidad — whose ethnic heritage is Filipino — started thinking more deeply about issues of historical injustice and institutional racism.
"We now know that these areas that were thought to be barren and stable are actually quite dynamic," said Ricardo Letelier, an Oregon State University biogeochemist and ecologist, who in collaboration with David Karl at the University of Hawaii led this study.

Attending Veterinarian candidate: The Research Office is hosting an open campus forum for Lynn Impelluso, candidate for the position of Attending Veterinarian/Laboratory Animal Resource Center director. Naval ROTC Spring Commissioning: On June 14 at 10 a.m., the OSU Naval ROTC unit will gather on the Student Experience Center Plaza to commission 14 officers into the United States Navy and Marine Corps. The ceremony will involve the oath of office, assistance into uniform by the students’ families, rendering of the first salute, and remarks from Rear Adm. Jesse Wilson Jr.

Bioinformatics Users Group (BUG): “Machine learning for phenomics and association testing in genome-wide association studies of regeneration in poplar, i.e. how neural networks help us to see the phenes and the genes,” Michael Nagle (Steve Strauss lab), Wednesday, June 12, at noon in ALS 3006. Scheduled: Campus Wide Steam Shutdown: Each year Facilities Services performs necessary maintenance on the university’s steam system, which requires shutting off the steam throughout campus, to complete maintenance services at the plant, throughout the steam tunnels and in each building. This process affects hot water supply, heating, and all equipment that uses steam, campus wide. The steam shutdown for 2019 will occur from 6 p.m. on June 16 to 5 p.m. on June 20.
