What dogs do when humans are not around, according to experts (Salon)

"What dogs do when we are not around also depends on the individual, age, location and even the quality of relationship we share with them," Dr. Monique Udell, an associate professor who specializes in human-animal bonding at Oregon State University, told Salon by email. Puppies, for instance, are more likely to get into mischief because they are biologically programmed to spend more of their time in activities like exploring and teething. Younger dogs can also experience more frequent bathroom problems, similar to older dogs.
 

Building a better cookstove (NSF)

For years, Nordica MacCarty, an engineering professor at Oregon State University, has worked to address this issue, helping design more efficient cookstoves and persuading reluctant communities to adopt them. MacCarty helps lead the university's Humanitarian Engineering and Design for Social Impact programs and heads the nonprofit Aprovecho Research Center, which aids the developing world in testing and improving wood-burning cookstoves.

NEW! The Making of a Public Radio Show: A Conversation with the Team from Live Wire. Live Wire is a weekly radio variety program that features interviews with writers, musicians, activists, and other interesting folks, plus musical guests and comedy. The show is taped live in Portland once a month, then broadcast around the country, where it airs on 200 public radio stations. Live Wire’s host, Luke Burbank, and executive producer, Laura Hadden, share over 30 years of Public Radio experience between them. OSU Associate Professor Elena Passarello has served as Live Wire’s Announcer since 2018. The event is 7:30-9 p.m. April 25 at The LaSells Stewart Center. Reserve a seat. This event will also be broadcast live on KBVR FM 88.7 and on the KBVR-FM website.

Recruiting Polar STEAM Fellows for broader impacts: Polar STEAM is recruiting NSF-funded researchers for collaborations with educators, artists and writers to develop broader impacts related to polar research. For 2023, researchers may be field based, conducting remote data monitoring, or a combination of both. Educators will be virtual. For future years, Polar STEAM will expand to include field deployments for educators, open applications to artists and writers and continue supporting virtual collaborations. Visit the Polar STEAM website and FAQ section to learn more and apply. Priority deadline for the 2023 field season is March 31.

2023 Faculty Innovator Award: Nominations are now being accepted for this award that honors an outstanding Oregon State University inventors who have made contributions leading to commercialization that significantly impacts their field and society. For details and the nomination form visit the OSU Advantage website: 2023 Faculty Innovator Award. The swardee will receive $5,000 prize and a desktop award, and the awardee’s department will also receive $5,000. The nomination deadline is April 14.
