“There’s been an increase in understanding of how fungal pathogens play an important role in the forest: They remove the weakened trees and aid a resistant and vigorous pool of tree genetics,” says Oregon State University regional wildland fire specialist Ariel Cowan, who studies the intersection of soil health, wildfires, and fungi.
The Oregon State University Board of Trustees will meet Friday, May 27 to consider approving the university’s fiscal year 2022-23 operating budget of nearly $1.5 billion, as well as two major construction projects on the Corvallis campus.
And dogs are especially good at reading gestures like pointing. Experiments where humans point to a container with a treat or toy inside have shown that dogs can quickly pick up on non-verbal cues, says Monique Udell, an animal behaviorist at Oregon State University. They can even figure out novel movements, like pointing with toes instead of your fingers.

Art About Agriculture’s annual exhibition of agriculture and natural resource-themed artwork by Oregon State University’s College of Agricultural Sciences has started a statewide tour in Corvallis and will continue on to Baker City and Newport in the coming months. The theme of the 39th annual juried competition and touring exhibition is "Sustainable Feast,” and it presents art from Northwest artists whose work explores food production and consumption, sustainability, diversity and innovation in our food system.

Forums for candidates for OSU presidency: Two finalists seeking to serve as Oregon State’s next president will visit the Corvallis campus Tuesday, May 24. On On Tuesday, community conversations with Jayathi Y. Murthy, dean of the School of Engineering and Applied Science at University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA), will be held from 10:30-11:15 a.m. and from 1-1:45 p.m. in the Memorial Union Journey Room A, and a university forum, including a candidate presentation, will be held from 3-4 p.m. in the MU Horizon Room. The OSU Board of Trustees will interview Murthy in executive session Tuesday at 8 a.m. These public community conversations and forums will be held in-person, streamed live and will be recorded with a link for later viewing available on the presidential search website. The search website also will have a link for OSU community members and stakeholders to provide feedback on candidates.
Relaxation “Micro-Moments” and Winding Down Techniques: The problem with most attempts to adopt stress-management or self-care routines is that they require time, effort and planning. The reality for many people who have stressful jobs is that they are too physically exhausted and mentally depleted by the end of the day to initiate activities commonly recommended to reduce stress in their lives. The trick is to intervene via multiple “micro-moments” of relaxation or mindful practices which only take 15 to 60 seconds. May 24, noon. Register here.

NEW! Community Climate Survey: The 2022 Faculty and Staff Community Climate Survey launched on May 10 with an invitation from Interim Vice President and Chief Diversity Officer Scott Vignos. Please check your email to access the survey link; the survey is open through June 3. The survey is administered every two years to gauge the opinions and perceptions of employees regarding their experience at OSU. It is one part of OSU’s broader efforts to create and sustain an inclusive and equitable university climate. To hear from as many people as possible, a $25 incentive will be provided to 50 randomly selected survey participants. The information participants enter for the incentive will not be linked to responses to the survey to ensure responses remain anonymous. Call for Applications: Career Champions Program. Applications for the fall 2022 Career Champions program for teaching faculty and instructors are now being accepted. The Career Champions program provides faculty and instructors with tangible ways to incorporate career connection into the classroom, while advancing diversity, equity and inclusion and examining the barriers to access for first-generation, high financial need, and/or students of color. Apply for a grant to make student learning more affordable: OSU's Open Educational Resources Unit is accepting proposals for the Affordable Learning Grant before the June 1 deadline. The grant provides funding to adopt, adapt or author an open educational resource, such as a textbook. An open textbook is one that is published under an open copyright license and is made freely available online for students, faculty and the public. All funding is a department-to-department transfer. Sigma Alpha raffle: Oregon Agriculture in the Classroom is an organization that helps Oregon K-12 schools incorporate agriculture-related activities into their curriculums to inform students about ag. World Oceans Day: World Oceans Day is June 8. The OSU Marine Studies Initiative is compiling OSU-led events and resources to recognize this day and help raise awareness about the importance of a healthy ocean. Free COVID tests: Free iHealth COVID-19 Antigen Rapid Tests are available around the Corvallis campus. Each box contains two tests. While supplies last, OSU community members can pick up these self-test kits at the following locations: Residence Hall Service Centers (Arnold, McNary and West); Lab tent outside Plageman Hall; Memorial Union Info Desk and Student Experience Center Info Desk. COVID-19 testing: Oregon State University, in collaboration with Willamette Valley Toxicology (WVT), is providing on-site COVID-19 testing for people without symptoms. OSU employees and students, regardless of vaccination status, are welcome to test at one of these locations: Corvallis: Lab tent outside Plageman Hall Monday-Friday, 10 a.m.-3 p.m., and Cascade Hall 120, Monday-Friday, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Bend: Outside Obsidian Hall Monday-Thursday, 9 a.m.-1 p.m. and 3-5 p.m. Note: All employees will need a WVT Labdash account prior to testing.
Washington Way: For work related to the Washington Way Improvement Project, a closure is planned for the western portion of the sidewalk and driveway access south of Dixon Recreation Center and Goss Stadium along SW Washington Way (view map). A contractor will be onsite excavating a trench to install new conduit for future relocated power.
Utility tunnel: May 11-June 3. For work related to the Community Hall Slope Project, an access hatch to the utility tunnel will be removed and relocated. The current hatch is located on Jefferson Avenue across from Kerr Administration Building. Additional access hatches can be found west, north and east of this location. Communication lines in the tunnel in this area are temporarily supported and impede movement. Staff should avoid this area of the tunnel, if possible.
Washington Way: For work related to the Washington Way Improvement Project, a planned sidewalk closure along the north side of SW Washington Way is scheduled to run from 8 a.m. Friday, May 6 through 5 p.m. Monday, June 13. Pacific Power will be on site performing work related to the project (view map).
