Michelle Barnhart is an associate professor of marketing at Oregon State University. She and a colleague have studied gun violence for the past six years as it relates to marketing "Guns are a huge product. There's a lot of marketing that happens with guns," Barnhart said. "It's the only consumer product in the United States that is constitutionally protected in terms of actually being able to consume it."
Oregon State University is likely within days of choosing its next president. Last week, community members were invited to engage with the two presidential finalists: Jayathi Y. Murthy, dean of the School of Engineering and Applied Science at the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA), and Charles R. Martinez, Jr., dean of the College of Education at the University of Texas at Austin.
Oregon State University (OSU), known for its engineering program, is ready to show off what graduating seniors have done in the past school year the university's 2022 College of Engineering Expo.
To shine light on the matter, The Conversation reached out to Aimee Huff and Michelle Barnhart, two Oregon State University scholars who have studied the ins and outs of putting guns in the hands of the nation’s teachers as a way to protect students.
“It’s a simple thing” for humans, says robotics researcher Joe Davidson (Oregon State University). “You and I, we could close our eyes, reach into the tree. We could feel around, touch it, and say ‘hey, that’s an apple and the stem’s up here’. Pull, twist. We could do all that without even looking.”
Some county clerks are appointed, but in many counties in Oregon and elsewhere they are beholden to the whims of voters who may not be paying attention, said Christopher McKnight Nichols, an associate professor of history at Oregon State University. There's a “myopia and invisibility about this sort of office in American public life,” he said.

“The writing was on the wall: She’s a populist candidate. She’s good at campaigning. She’s got supporters,” said Christopher McKnight Nichols, an Oregon politics watcher and history professor at Oregon State University. “But it’s still a shock because an incumbent Democrat losing to somewhat of an outsider in a primary is uncommon. [Schrader] had a lot of money here.”
The Oregon State University board of trustees approved a 7.3-million-dollar project to OSU’s Whyte Track and Field Center. “It's a great time to be a beaver,” said OSU Athletic Director Scott Barnes.

Timely Teaching Tips: Giving students space to write out their thoughts before a test can clear working memory and potentially reduce test anxiety. Encourage students to arrive early to the final if possible. Consider having the Academic Success Center’s Write It Out handout available so they can take five minutes before the exam to transition into the space and clear their minds.
John Williams Birthday Celebration: The Oregon State University Wind Ensemble, Wind Symphony and Campus Band will perform selections from Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Superman, Jurassic Park and more. Board of Trustees: The Oregon State University Board of Trustees will meet virtually in executive session at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 31 to discuss matters related to the employment of the university’s next president. The board will meet virtually in public session at 3:30 p.m. to delegate authority to the chair of the board to negotiate contract terms with ranked candidates seeking to serve as OSU’s next president. Recruiting participants for virtual reality experiment: Psychology researchers are seeking participants who are at least 18 years old, speak fluent English and have normal or corrected-to-normal vision for research aiming to explore how perception and movement interact in real and virtual environments. Participants will complete movement- and perception-based tasks for around one hour. Those who complete the study will receive $15 in Amazon credit. Community Climate Survey: The 2022 Faculty and Staff Community Climate Survey launched on May 10 with an invitation from Interim Vice President and Chief Diversity Officer Scott Vignos. Please check your email to access the survey link; the survey is open through June 3. The survey is administered every two years to gauge the opinions and perceptions of employees regarding their experience at OSU. It is one part of OSU’s broader efforts to create and sustain an inclusive and equitable university climate. To hear from as many people as possible, a $25 incentive will be provided to 50 randomly selected survey participants. The information participants enter for the incentive will not be linked to responses to the survey to ensure responses remain anonymous. Call for Applications: Career Champions Program. Applications for the fall 2022 Career Champions program for teaching faculty and instructors are now being accepted. The Career Champions program provides faculty and instructors with tangible ways to incorporate career connection into the classroom, while advancing diversity, equity and inclusion and examining the barriers to access for first-generation, high financial need, and/or students of color. Free COVID tests: Free iHealth COVID-19 Antigen Rapid Tests are available around the Corvallis campus. Each box contains two tests. While supplies last, OSU community members can pick up these self-test kits at the following locations: Residence Hall Service Centers (Arnold, McNary and West); Lab tent outside Plageman Hall; Memorial Union Info Desk and Student Experience Center Info Desk. COVID-19 testing: Oregon State University, in collaboration with Willamette Valley Toxicology (WVT), is providing on-site COVID-19 testing for people without symptoms. OSU employees and students, regardless of vaccination status, are welcome to test at one of these locations: Corvallis: Lab tent outside Plageman Hall Monday-Friday, 10 a.m.-3 p.m., and Cascade Hall 120, Monday-Friday, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Bend: Outside Obsidian Hall Monday-Thursday, 9 a.m.-1 p.m. and 3-5 p.m. Note: All employees will need a WVT Labdash account prior to testing.
Utility tunnel: May 11-June 3. For work related to the Community Hall Slope Project, an access hatch to the utility tunnel will be removed and relocated. The current hatch is located on Jefferson Avenue across from Kerr Administration Building. Additional access hatches can be found west, north and east of this location. Communication lines in the tunnel in this area are temporarily supported and impede movement. Staff should avoid this area of the tunnel, if possible.
Washington Way: For work related to the Washington Way Improvement Project, a planned sidewalk closure along the north side of SW Washington Way is scheduled to run from 8 a.m. Friday, May 6 through 5 p.m. Monday, June 13. Pacific Power will be on site performing work related to the project (view map).
