“You look at Penn Station — it was not designed to handle the volume that it does,” said Katharine M. Hunter-Zaworski, an associate professor of civil and construction engineering at Oregon State University who has studied train platform safety. “Penn Station is so difficult. It’s historic. You’ve got all the different operators with different value systems there. But, I think, some of the solutions are very simple.”

Material Motion: Artist Eric Dyer will present a talk on “Material Motion” at 7 p.m. Nov. 13 in the Construction & Engineering Auditorium at the LaSells Stewart Center, 875 SW 26th St., Corvallis. A reception will be held at 6 p.m. The reception and the talk are free and open to the public. The event is part of the Visiting Artists and Scholars Lecture Series sponsored by the School of Arts and Communication at OSU. While at Oregon State, Dyer also will review and critique student artwork.

The Nature of Gratitude Show: Spring Creek Project will host the "Nature of Gratitude" at Old World Deli on Tuesday, Nov. 13, at 7 p.m. Local writers and artists including Charles Goodrich, Tom Titus and Eric Allen will present poems, music, stories and photography expressing gratitude. Geography Awareness Week: The Geography and Geospatial Science faculty invite you to celebrate Geography Awareness Week and GIS DAY on Wednesday, Nov. 14 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m, with activities that highlight the importance of Geography in understanding our dynamic human-environment relationship. Join us as we explore these relationships through the OmniGlobe, the HoloGlobe and the Atlas of the Pacific Northwest.  In addition, Geography faculty will present their research at an afternoon seminar. Activities will take place in the LINC Building foyer as well as Burt 193. 

NEW! Artist talk: Artist Philip March Jones will speak at 4 p.m. Nov. 14 in the Fairbanks Gallery of Art on Oregon State University’s Corvallis campus. For nearly 15 years, Jones, a New York-based artist, writer and curator, has worked daily on a series of drawings, paintings, writings and collages in small workbooks that he carries with him.  The talk is free and open to the public. The gallery is on the first floor of Fairbanks Hall, 220 SW 26th St.

Science Fiction and Social Justice: Black Mirror Episode Viewing: The ECC and the Anarres Project for Alternative Futures will be hosting a Black Mirror episode viewing, where we will watch and discuss social justice themes presented in the episode. Clothing swap: A clothing swap is taking place Nov. 1-30 at the Hattie Redmond Women & Gender Center on campus. Accepting gently used clothing donations for all gender identities, ages and sizes. No donations necessary to participate. Hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Fiddle choir: The touring fiddle choir Childsplay will perform at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 14 in The LaSells Stewart Center, 875 S.W. 26th St., on the Oregon State University campus in Corvallis. Led by violin maker Robert Childs, Childsplay is comprised of more than 20 musicians from around the U.S. and Ireland, with each member of the string section playing a violin or viola handmade by Childs. CORE Reports for Late-Term Proactive Advising: The end of the term is in sight, but a student may need that final boost or some targeted information to cross the finish line or take the next step. This workshop looks at resources around late-term proactive advising to make sure students succeed and are ready for next term. Faculty Senate Elections – Non-Tenured Faculty with Split Appointments: According to the Faculty Senate bylaws (http://senate.oregonstate.edu/bylaws Article V. Sec. 1.) non-tenured faculty who have split appointments between two apportionment units may choose with which unit they wish to be apportioned for senate purposes; this choice will determine senate representation. For example, if a faculty member has a split appointment between Agricultural Sciences and Science, they may choose one or the other (FTE will not be split among units). Faculty not choosing where they wish to be apportioned will be placed in an apportionment unit at the discretion of the Faculty Senate Office.
