One population of whales studied by Oregon State University scientists no longer goes to the Arctic to feed, instead staying along the coasts of Oregon, Washington and British Columbia.

The unpredictability of these waves makes them tricky to study. Tuba Özkan-Haller, an Oregon State University professor, is among the wave scientists who are trying to save people from sneaker waves by understanding them better, and recently, they’ve made some headway.

Oregon State University received $749,997 for its OSU Extension Small Farms Program, which is developing programs to help launch new farmers and ranchers.
 

The fascinating, deadly pufferfish (Boing Boing)

Dr. Brian Sidlauskas, Associate Professor and Curator of Fishes at Oregon State University, notes puffers evolved from a group of fish (porcupines, molids, triggerfishes, and filefishes) that all possessed ctenoid scales, denoted by small teeth along their outer edges. "Filefishes actually feel fuzzy. So it isn't perhaps too surprising to imagine those scales expanding and getting more and more spiny."
 

Scott Vignos appointed OSU chief diversity officer (Corvallis Advocate)

Scott Vignos, who has served as Oregon State University’s interim vice president and chief diversity officer since fall 2021, has been named to the position on a permanent basis.
 

Quinoa (Line on Agriculture)

Oregon State University is testing some of the first ever quinoa plantings in the Pacific Northwest. Technically it's not a grain but the seed of a leafy plant related to spinach.

The AAAHC inspires high-quality care in health facilities by emphasizing excellence in standards throughout the 1,095 days of the accreditation term. SHS will be reevaluated in October 2025.

EXTENDED! Nominations are open for the 2023 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemoration Awards, honoring OSU community members who exemplify qualities of service and selflessness. This year, nominations will be accepted for four awards: the Phyllis S. Lee Award, the Frances Dancy Hooks Award, the Oscar Humberto Montemayor Award and the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Alumni Legacy Award. Free COVID tests: Free iHealth COVID-19 Antigen Rapid Tests are available on the Corvallis and Bend campuses and at the Hatfield Marine Science Center in Newport. Each box contains two tests. While supplies last, OSU community members can pick up these self-test kits without restrictions. Please note the FDA has extended the self-test kit expiration dates by six months.
