The U.S. Department of Energy has awarded $3 million to an Oregon State University researcher to lead the development of a new, high-energy-density battery that does not rely on rare elements. (see also Portland Business Journal)
Oregon State University will reform its baccalaureate core — its general education courses — for the first time since the 1990s.
The district's mix of urban and rural areas is making for a tight political race this year, said Chris Stout, a politics professor at Oregon State University. "In a year like 2022, where Republicans are having an advantage and people are concerned about crime ... inflation, it makes it a much more competitive race," Stout said.
Jacob Putney, an Oregon State University Extension Service forester, was named 2021 Forester of the Year by the Oregon Society of American Foresters.

Center for Teaching & Learning Quality Teaching (QT) Talks: "Peer Observations and Portfolios: Advancing Teaching Practices," presented by Funmi Amobi, instructional consultant, and college liaison.. Peer observation (PO) of teaching can be used to serve two purposes. Whether PO is implemented for evaluative or formative purpose, the overarching goal is to advance effective quality teaching that supports student learning success. Beaver Boosters: OSU will be providing COVID-19 booster clinics on the OSU Corvallis campus, Tuesday, Nov. 15 through Thursday, Nov. 17, from noon to 4 p.m. in Memorial Union Room 62. Clinics are open to the public and will provide updated bivalent boosters for individuals 5 and older, plus COVID-19 vaccine for ages 6 months and older, while supplies last. Forest Management Plan Listening Session: There will be a public listening session Thursday, Nov. 17 from 6-7:30 p.m. via Zoom to discuss recent drafts of the Forest Management Plan (FMP) being developed by OSU. WGSS 611 Colloquium Series: “haʔɫ kʷ(i) adsəslabcebut/Watch Over Yourself Well: (Re)writing Two-Spirit Coast Salish Bodies through Canoe-Based Practices.” Kyles Gemmell centers Coast Salish canoe-based practices as a means of understanding Coast Salish Two-Spirit critiques and identities. Their research centers canoe rules that community members are to abide by as a means of developing a culturally relevant methodological approach to research. Grounding their research in the foundation of the canoe and canoe family, Gemmell engages community, personal experience, and archival research as a means to move towards healing from gendered and racialized colonial violence. NEW! My People Are Rising: The History and Legacy of the Black Panthers in the PNW. Talk by Aaron Dixon, community activist, co-founder and captain of the Black Panther Party, Seattle chapter. Dixon co-founded the Seattle chapter of the Black Panther Party in 1968. Dixon will draw on his published memoir, "My People Are Rising," to discuss his experiences fighting for Black empowerment and racial justice. NEW! Call for applications: Faculty are invited to participate in implementing the new general education curriculum approved by the Faculty Senate in October. We seek 40-50 faculty volunteers to develop the learning outcomes, criteria and rational (LOCRs) for the new curriculum. These faculty will serve on 10 workgroups, one for each category. There are two main roles: LOCR developers and LOCR mentors. Application deadline is Nov. 16. Lee Award, the Frances Dancy Hooks Award, the Oscar Humberto Montemayor Award and the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Alumni Legacy Award. NEW! The Music Technology and Production program at OSU is producing an album during winter and spring terms. We are soliciting songwriters from around campus to send us a demo of an original song for possible inclusion. $15K of Funding Available: The OSU Advantage Innovation Impact Program is currently seeking applications that describe technology-based projects in any discipline that will move OSU-owned technologies closer to commercialization. Proposals should describe a project that requires $15,000 or less of funding to achieve an important milestone(s) connected to commercialization. Each project may be awarded up to $15,000 and should span nine months or less, beginning in January 2023. Proposals are due by 5 p.m., Nov. 30. Contact [email protected] with questions. Call for Applications: Career Champions Program. Applications for the winter 2023 Career Champions program for teaching faculty and instructors are now being accepted. The Career Champions program provides faculty and instructors with tangible ways to incorporate career connection into the classroom while advancing diversity, equity and inclusion and examining the barriers to access for first-generation, high-financial need, and/or students of color. Free COVID tests: Free iHealth COVID-19 Antigen Rapid Tests are available on the Corvallis and Bend campuses and at the Hatfield Marine Science Center in Newport. Each box contains two tests. While supplies last, OSU community members can pick up these self-test kits without restrictions. Please note the FDA has extended the self-test kit expiration dates by six months.
Lane closure on SW Washington Way through Nov. 10: As part of the Washington Way Improvement Project, there will be a one-lane closure with flagging operations on SW Washington Way between SW 35th and SW 30th Streets. Work is scheduled to take place from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. daily, starting Monday, Oct. 24 and continuing through Thursday, Nov. 10 (view map).
