The change in forests has changed the way fire behaves in them, said John Bailey, a forestry professor at Oregon State University. “Fire behavior is based on three things: landscape, weather and fuel,” he said. “The topography hasn’t changed, but there are many acres out there that have more fuel than they’ve ever had.”

Columbia River treaty: Thanks to the sacrifices made by those who lost property to new reservoirs in 1964, development along the lower Columbia has proceeded with confidence that it would be protected from floodwaters. Since then other issues missing from the treaty — water quality, navigation, recreation and climate change — have become significant. Tuesday Teaching Talks: Lesson Planning & Reflection. Join colleagues and the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) in a certificated series of teaching workshops. Attend one, some, or all. Oregon Wine Research Institute Seminar SeriesClive Kaiser, professor and Extension horticulturist at OSU, will present “Water Reduction in Wine Grapes Using HydroShield, a Novel Plant Coating” on Tuesday, Oct. 16, from noon to 1 p.m. in Kidder 202. Kaiser will discuss the development of HydroShield, which is being patented by OSU. Free and open to the public.

Theodore Roosevelt at OSU. Joe Wiegand is the nation’s premiere reprisor of Theodore Roosevelt. His live performances have been featured at hundreds of historic places associated with TR’s life and legacy. Wiegand has been featured at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City and served as the body model for the seated naturalist Roosevelt bronze sculpture in Roosevelt Memorial Hall at the Museum. Featured at the official National Park Service Centennial Celebration at Yellowstone National Park, his Theodore Roosevelt is based on solid scholarship and delivered with Rooseveltian showmanship. Free and open to all. Tuesday, Oct.16, 3 p.m. MU, Multipurpose Room 13.

NEW! Tomorrow is Fall Career Expo Day 1: Wednesday, Oct. 17, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. is the Fall 2018 Career Expo. Career Fair Day 1 for STEM fields will be in the CH2M Hill Alumni Center and the Civil & Construction Engineering (CCE) Fair will be in the club level of Reser Stadium. Thursday, Oct. 18, is Day 2 of the Career Expo where employers will be recruiting for jobs and internships in the arts, humanities, business, and healthcare. These events are free to students and faculty.

NEW! SEIU meeting:  SEIU Local 503 deputy director Siobhan Martin will give a presentation on the Public Employee Benefits Board (PEBB). The Young Karl MarxFilm and DiscussionFrom the award-winning director of the James Baldwin biography "I am Not your Negro" Raoul Peck, comes a new dramatic film that portrays the early intellectual and political development of one of the modern world's most influential thinkers: Karl Marx. Marking the 200th anniversary of Marx's birth, the Anarres Project will show "The Young Karl Marx" (2017) and host a short discussion about the impact of Marx's ideas in our world. The Mission District - A Window on Humanity: Dick Evans (’69 B.S. Industrial Engineering) is a senior international business adviser and an accomplished photographer. His book of photographs, “The Mission,” capturing the pulse of life in the Mission District of San Francisco, was a finalist for the Next Generation Indie Book Awards for Art. On Oct. 18 from 3 to 5 p.m. in Covell Hall, 35 prints from “The Mission” will be on display, and Evans will be available to answer questions. Evans will give an artist talk at 5 p.m. in Kearney Hall 312 (reception following). Both the exhibit and talk are free and open to the public. Seating for the talk is limited. Drop-in Art Reception: The Need To Know Comes In Waves, a collection of paintings by Samm Newton, will be on view at the OSU Center for the Humanities through December. Newton studies in OSU’s Environmental Arts and Humanities program, and worked alongside scientists to create this series exploring how we think, feel, and make decisions about the ocean. NEW! Why Prisons are Not the New Asylums - Lecture by Liat Ben-Moshe. Without disregarding the reality of having disproportioned numbers of people with disabilities (psychiatric, cognitive, learning disabilities) in jails and prisons, Ben-Moshe will caution against declarations that jails are becoming the largest mental health facilities in the U.S. She will offer a more nuanced explanation that incorporates perspectives from critical prison studies with disability studies/mad studies frameworks to shed new light on processes of incarceration and deinstitutionalization at present and in the past. Thursday, Oct. 18, 4 p.m. Strand Ag. Sea Grant symposium: Oregon Sea Grant is holding its biennial Scholars Day Symposium, Friday, Oct. 19, 1 to 4:15 pm, in Memorial Union Room 109. Students currently supported by Oregon Sea Grant's marine and coastal science programs will present talks and posters that link research, education, extension, fellowship and communication. The public is welcome.

Trick or Treat Thru Gill: The annual Trick or Treat with the Beaver student-athletes is back and scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 31, at Gill Coliseum from 7-8 p.m. Each of OSU’s intercollegiate sports teams participates in the event and all children are encouraged to come dressed in their favorite costumes. The event is free.

OSU Athletics Hall of Fame: Join iconic members of the 2006 and ’07 College World Series championship baseball teams and the 1970 and ’71 volleyball teams that changed the culture of women’s athletics at OSU at the official induction ceremony Friday, Oct. 19, at the Toyota Club in Reser Stadium. The ceremony also includes the induction of longtime OSU administrator Sylvia Moore, standout women’s basketball player Felicia Ragland, and one of the first African American athletes at OSU, Earnel Durden. Research fellowships: The OSU Center for the Humanities is now accepting proposals for 2019-20 research fellowships. Information about awards, application forms, and instructions are available online. The deadline to submit proposals is Friday, Nov. 9. Two drop-in information sessions will be held at the Autzen House, so come by if you have any questions on Tuesday Oct. 23, 2-4 p.m. or Tuesday Oct. 30, 10 a.m. to noon. 

Confederated Tribes RFP: The Confederated Tribes of Siletz is soliciting proposals for a consultant to develop a Siletz historical and cultural curriculum for grades 4, 8 and 10, with a total of 45 lessons.  The contract period begins on Nov. 13 and a completion date of June 30, 2019. The work may be performed anywhere with the understanding that travel to Siletz for consultation with appropriate staff will be required as the curriculum is developed. Some consultation may occur by other means.

Library Services Review Board: OSU Libraries’ new Library Services Review Board (LSRB) gives OSU students a voice in the Valley Library. The first meeting is set for Nov. 13, from 4 -6 p.m. Come share your ideas regarding the Valley Library. Upcoming Fiscal Policy Changes: Several years ago, the Division of Finance and Administration initiated an extensive review of the university’s processes related to fiscal policies, dedicating a "Lean Process Team" to evaluate current practices. The team identified potential risks, best practices, opportunities for improvement and ultimately recommended a new fiscal policy program. This program has been under development for the past year and will be implemented campus-wide in the very near future.
