University of Oklahoma, Oregon State University launch billion dollar-plus campaigns (Forbes)

Oregon State University announced last Friday that it was launching its second comprehensive capital campaign, Believe It: The Campaign for Oregon State University. It had concluded its first campaign in 2014, raising just a bit over $1.1 billion. (see also KEZIKOINSeattle Daily Journal of Commerce)
 

Government scientists make breakthrough in recycling plastics that end up in landfills (VICE)

First, the group used metal-catalyzed oxidation to break the plastics down into smaller molecules that are ideal for biological conversion. These molecules can best be described as “smaller, biologically friendly chemical building blocks” co-author and Oregon State University Researcher Lucas Ellis notes in a press release. This is necessary for the next step of the process: feeding it to bacteria.
 

San Francisco's forgotten sourdough company and the mystery of its lost starter (SF Gate)

Lavaroni even tracked down William Sandine, an Oregon State University microbiologist who helped identify the bacteria (lactobacillus sanfrancisco) responsible for San Francisco sourdough’s unique flavor, to find out whether the integrity of the starter could even survive all these varying climates.

"The Scientist's Warning" Film Premiere with Bill Ripple: A screening of a new film featuring Bill Ripple takes place Tuesday. Ripple is leading a movement for scientists to step out from behind the data and advocate for our planet. Oct. 18, Whiteside Theatre. Doors and refreshments at 6 p.m.; film at 7 p.m. Introduction by Kathleen Dean Moore. Ripple will join filmmaker David Baker for a Q&A following the screening. NEW! VPCDO candidate visits: Candidates for OSU Vice President and Chief Diversity Officer will be on campus Thursday, Oct. 20 and Monday, Oct. 24. NEW! Beaver Boosters: OSU will be providing COVID-19 booster clinics on the OSU Corvallis campus, Monday, Nov. 14 through Friday, Nov. 18, from noon to 4 p.m. in Memorial Union Room 62. Clinics are open to the public and will provide updated bivalent boosters for individuals 12 and older, while supplies last. No appointments are needed and boosters are free of charge. Ag career fair: Oregon State University’s eighth annual Agricultural Career Fair & Student Showcase Oct. 19, 10 a.m.-2 p.m., is the primary recruiting event of the year for students across the College of Agricultural Sciences – including horticulture, agricultural business, animal science, sustainability, bioresource research, crop and soil science, food science and more. Historic Fairbanks Hall is open: To mark the reopening of historic Fairbanks Hall and its renovated studio and gallery spaces, faculty and alumni of OSU’s art program present "Through Line," a show featuring painting, photography, sculpture and video art, Oct. 14-Nov. 13, in Fairbanks Gallery and Praxis Gallery.  An artist’s reception for the current exhibition and new installation will take place on Oct. 20, 4:30-7:30 p.m. in conjunction with the downtown Corvallis Art Walk.

University Theatre: With the support of the OSU Arts and Education Center's "Unboxed" event series, University Theatre will present Andrea Stolowtiz’s romantic comedy "Successful Strategies" in four limited-seating public performances. This unique play about a winery, set in a winery, is hosted by the Lumos Wine Company, with performances Oct. 21, 22, 28 and 29 at 7:30 p.m. in the Lumos Winery tasting room, 24000 Cardwell Hill Dr., Philomath. Tickets are advance purchase only and go on sale at 8 a.m. Friday, Oct. 7. College success for veterans: OSU’s College of Business is hosting a College Success Workshop in partnership with the Warrior-Scholar Project on Oct. 28, 9 a.m.-5 p.m., Austin Hall 126. This is a free one-day workshop for veterans and service members transitioning to college. The workshops are taught by fellow enlisted veterans who are currently enrolled in four-year universities. NEW! WOHESC proposal deadline extended: OSU will host the Washington and Oregon Higher Education Sustainability Conference March 6-8 in Corvallis. WOHESC brings together 400-500 students, staff, faculty and others to solve the most pressing problems of our time, including social and environmental justice, and the inequitable impacts of climate change. The Call for Proposal deadline has been extended to this Friday, Oct. 21. The 2023 WOHESC theme is Mindscape and Landscape: The Intertwined Nature of Mental, Social and Planetary Health.

Faculty Senate Elections – Faculty with Split Appointments: According to the Faculty Senate Bylaws, non-tenured faculty who have split appointments between two apportionment units may choose with which unit they wish to be apportioned for Faculty Senate purposes. This choice will determine Faculty Senate representation. Faculty not indicating where they wish to be apportioned will be placed in an apportionment unit at the discretion of the Faculty Senate Office. Recruiting participants for bicycling simulator experiment: The OSU Bicycling Simulator lab is seeking participants for an experiment who are at least 18 years old and have ridden a bicycle in the last 10 years. The purpose of this study is to make autonomous vehicles safer for bicyclists. Participation involves a one-hour time commitment and coming to the OSU Bicycling Simulator. Persons who participated in the first stage of this study (pedestrian or bicycle, conducted January 2022) are ineligible to participate. Participants will be compensated $20 for their time. Free COVID tests: Free iHealth COVID-19 Antigen Rapid Tests are available on the Corvallis and Bend campuses and at the Hatfield Marine Science Center in Newport. Each box contains two tests. While supplies last, OSU community members can pick up these self-test kits without restrictions. Please note the FDA has extended the self-test kit expiration dates by six months.
