“Going from chilly to balmy weather can stimulate more recreation, and our data and models bear that out,” says Steven Dundas, corresponding author of the study and an assistant professor of applied economics at Oregon State University. “But increasing temperature when it’s already hot can curtail fishing participation. For example, we estimate participation declines once daily high temperatures reach the mid-90s Fahrenheit.”
 

Massive new study links pollution to assaults and domestic violence (MarketWatch)

Researchers used eight years’ of data — from 2006 to 2013 — on crime rates, pollution, wildfire smoke and weather to calculate the correlations. These included crime data from the Federal Bureau of Investigations’ National Incident Based Reporting System; pollution data from the Environmental Protection Agency’s Air Quality System network of monitors and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Hazard Mapping System; and weather data from Oregon State University’s PRISM Climate Group.
 

Council affirms vote on OSU dorm, rejects Caldwell Farms annexation (Gazette-Times)

Councilors voted 5-4, with Mayor Biff Traber breaking a 4-4 tie, on the second reading Monday of an ordinance that backs an Oregon State University development sector swap. The vote, pending possible appeals, will allow the university to move forward with a 295-bed dormitory project for upper-division and graduate students.

Sustainable alternative lawns (Earth 911)

Oregon State University developed some of the first alternative lawns. They contained a mixture of lawn grasses and low-growing, drought-resistant broadleaf plants.

Flu Shot Clinics: The Office of Human Resources in partnership with Fred Meyer Pharmacies will offer flu shot clinics for faculty, staff and their dependents age 7 or above on Oct 8, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., in  the MU Ballroom. Bring your insurance card and photo ID (for billing). Wear short sleeves. Plan on staying for five minutes after receiving the vaccination. If paying at the time of service, payment by cash (with exact change) or check will be the only methods of payment accepted. PEBB Statewide (Providence), Providence Choice and Moda plans will cover the cost of the flu vaccinations. Employees with Kaiser insurance must pay at the time of vaccination, or go to a Kaiser facility for a free flu shot.

Film Screening “Survival of the Sunbears”: Fisheries and Wildlife student Jocelyn Stokes has directed a 30-minute film focused on the conservation efforts by nonprofits in Malaysia to protect this highly endangered species. Board of Trustees: The OSU Board will meet from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 18, in the Horizon Room of the Memorial Union. NEW! Budget conversation: On Thursday, Oct. 10 at noon, the Office of Budget & Resource Planning will hold another University Budget Conversation in the Memorial Union Room 215. This week’s topic is about an Overview of the FY20 Budget and Enrollment. The Budget Conversations sessions are limited to 60 minutes and are an open forum structure with the initial 15-20 minutes spent on presentation of the topic, leaving time for discussion and Q&A. Human-Elephant Coexistence In Malaysian Borneo: Renowned elephant biologist Nurzhafarina Othman will give a presentation about human-elephant conflicts and possibilities for coexistence in the manmade landscapes dominated by oil-palm plantations in Malaysian Borneo. Collections at the Center lecture: Melissa Santala, assistant professor of materials science, School of Mechanical, Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering, will present “Through the Lens: Tools for Extending our Vision and Knowledge through History” as part of Collections at the Center, a lecture and hands-on exploration series from the Special Collections and Archives Research Center. Using the collections of the SCARC and her experience as a materials scientist and microscopist, Santala will discuss the power and pitfalls of microscopes since 1600. Register for a CIM Training Session: OSU will implement a new curriculum proposal system in Fall 2019 called CIM (pronounced ‘Kim’), which will replace the current CPS. A representative from the vendor, Leepfrog, will be on the Corvallis campus Oct. 16-17 to provide training sessions on how to use CIM. Everyone who interacts with the current CPS or anticipates needing to propose, review or approve curriculum proposals in future, should attend this training.
